How I Spent Inauguration Day, January 20, 2005
Wondering why I haven't been blogging on the day of the inauguration of George W. Bush for a second term? My son Bennett had his adenoids removed this morning, and I've spent the day with him, and sleeping. I did watch Bush take the oath of office and give his speech focused on the world-transformational power of liberty and freedom. It was a very good speech, the kind that in the years to come may...
Christmas Scenes, December 25, 2004
Doll Tricycle Motor I think I love Christmas morning more now as a parent of two small children than I ever did when I was a child. I like being Santa. As joy-filled and fun as it is to give simple gifts of toys to my children, I can barely imagine the joy God must have felt when He gave us his son. For a picture of that , I refer you to Jeff...
Sadness in Seattle, December 09, 2004
"Their ideology is finally seeping into their souls."If you believe that man is nothing but a random collection of atoms, geared only toward self-preservation and bound by no moral imperatives, there comes a point when all your loud demands for justice and equality begin to ring hollow in the void of the universe. Why should you care if women are beaten by their husbands, if salmon die, if Iraqi children fall? Even if, irrationally, you...
Baby Boom, December 07, 2004
David Brooks observes:Young families move away from what they perceive as disorder, vulgarity and danger and move to places like Douglas County in Colorado (which is the fastest-growing county in the country and has one of the highest concentrations of kids). Some people see these exurbs as sprawling, materialistic wastelands, but many natalists see them as clean, orderly and affordable places where they can nurture children. If you wanted a one-sentence explanation for the explosive...

Meet Maggie, October 18, 2004
I remember when my niece was born. Now she's a mom, which makes me a great uncle. Meet little Maggie, born Friday, the member of my extended family who was most recently in the very presence of God. Any donations to my tip jar over the next 10 days I'll be forwarding to my niece for Maggie's benefit. Now, Will whoever has their foot pressed on the accelerator of my life please ease off...

My wife emails to inform my that my 2-year-old son Bennett, when unhappy, can be made happy by looking at pictures of cars on the computer. This one seems to be his favorite. He has good taste in cars....
Nails?, June 25, 2004
We installed one of these over the knobs on the cabinet under the kitchen sink where all the poisonous things are stored - detergents, bug killers and such - to keep Bennett, who is now 21 months old, from getting into them. That was last night. This morning, he fiddled with it for about two minutes, undid it, and walked around holding it up like a trophy. Suggestions?...
Doggies!, April 28, 2004
My son Bennett, almost 20 months old (!), is just starting to use words. Bye-Bye is his current favorite - and he drags it out in a sing-songy drawl. Another favorite word is "Doggies!", though it more often comes out as "Doddies!" And it comes out a lot. I bought him a book about Clifford the Big Red Dog. There are dogs on every page. "Doddies!" ... "Doddies!" ... "Doddies!" ... "Doddies!" ... "Doddies!" ......
The Times They Are a-CHANging, May 07, 2003
Three years ago, my darling daughter's favorite teevee shows were Teletubbies, Barney and Scooby Doo. Two years ago: Scooby, Courage the Cowardly Dog (no relation), and Clifford the Big Red Dog (no relation, no relation). Clifford came on the earliest, on PBS, and some nights there'd be a Scooby mystery on Cartoon Network and then an episode or two of the truly deranged Courage the Cowardly Dog. There's a Three Dog Night joke in there...
