"Hydroplane Racing is Like NASCAR on Water", June 30, 2005
... and it's coming to Nashville's J. Percy Priest Lake Sept 9-11. Check it out at MusicCityHydroFest.com if you're interested. The ticket price seems reasonable....

Philadelphia Realism, April 06, 2005
Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, I cheered for all four of the city's major-league sports teams. The Flyers, the Sixers, the Phillies and the Iggles Eagles. I stopped cheering for the Sixers they day they parted ways with Charles Barkley and won't start again until they part ways with Allen Iverson (and probably not even then - the NBA is boring). I don't follow hockey much, and couldn't name a single member of...

New Nashville Sports Blog, February 05, 2005
Local sports anchor John Dwyer at WKRN Channel 2 has launched a blog, DwyerWire, which promises to be good. Terry Heaton helped him get it started. Terry, a visionary broadcast news consultant, and WKRN are taking a leadership role in expanding the Nashville blogosphere - WKRN is even hosting a meet-up for Nashville bloggers a week from today. (Don't email me - Terry is handling the invites...) Welcome to the blogosphere, John....

A Random Sports-Related Thought, October 28, 2004
Random sports-related thought: When the Boston Red Sox were down three games to zero in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series to their nemesis the New York Yankees, what odds were the Las Vegas sports books giving on the Sox winning the World Series? And did anyone place a large bet on those odds?...

USA! USA!, August 23, 2004
I must admit I'm rooting for the USA's Olympic basketball team - which Donald Sensing notes has made history by losing twice in one Olympiad - to lose again and again, so that they don't win a medal. C'mon, admit it. The thought of Allen Iverson having a gold medal, or even a silver or a bronze, makes you want to wretch, too....

Gooooaaaaaaallllll!!!!!, August 12, 2004
I'm rooting for these guys in the Olympic soccer tournament. American sports champions are traditionally invited to the White House for a photo op with the president. No matter what medal the Iraqi soccer team wins or doesn't win, President Bush ought to have them flown straight from Athens to Washington when their games are over. And give them the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Even give one to the coach, who hasn't realized yet that...

Good Enough, June 14, 2004
Jeff Cornwall reflects on Tiger Woods, golf and life. Read the whole thing....

Baseball Bible Bobbleheads, June 02, 2004
I really don't know what to say about this:The Nashville Sounds, who received national recognition and widespread positive response throughout Middle Tennessee last year by organizing the first Christian-based sales program in professional baseball, have added three unique collectible giveaways to their "Faith Night" series this summer. Biblical figures Moses, Noah, and Samson will all be featured as bobblehead giveaways on the team’s Faith Nights during the upcoming weeks... "The church groups are going crazy...

Anticipation, April 28, 2004
I may be blogging a bit less in the future - yesterday I ordered and paid for a new road bike, a Trek 2100, which I purchased from Allanti!, a fine bicyle shop in Brentwood, Tenn. I haven't had a bike for the last four years and, with each passing day, I've missed riding more and more. If you're an avid cyclist, you understand. I'm looking forward to getting back out there on the country...

Gone in 62 Seconds, March 22, 2004
It's gone. Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, where I watched probably 30 or more Phillies games back when I was growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs, was imploded Sunday in a 62-second series of demolition explosions. The Philadelphia Inquirer has nice photo slide show of the demolition with their online story. (And if you're a fan of seeing buildings demolished by dynamite, visit ImplosionWorld.com. Really.) Also, here's coverage from the Philadelphia Daily News....

The Open Road, March 17, 2004
Are you a blogger and an avid bicyclist? I'm looking for you to become a contributor to Open Road, a new blog about bicycling that I'm launching here at www.billhobbs.com. It will be hosted, temporarily, as a subdomain of my blog and, if traffic grows, I'll move it to its own URL. I'm hoping to have numerous contributors submitting both text and digital images. Let me know if you're interested, at bill@billhobbs.com....

Bicycle Bloggers, March 10, 2004
I'm buying a new bike this month - click the picture to see which one - and after a four-year hiatus from regular road cycling, I intend to prepare over the next couple of years to eventually ride across the country. Motivation for this new bit of personal insanity: I turn 40 in June. I'd be interested in in hearing from other bloggers who ride regularly - road or mountain - who might be interested...

Blogs in the News: Baseball, Blogads and More, March 08, 2004
Reporter Michael Silence of the Knoxville News Sentinel is one reporter who understands blogging and writes about it intelligently. He's back with two more stories today. This one offers brief profiles of some East Tennessee bloggers. (For my non-Tennessee readers, Tennessee has three regions - East Tennessee includes the city of Knoxville, Middle Tennessee has Nashville, and West Tennessee has Memphis. I'm in Middle Tennessee.) Silence's other story today looks at how some Tennessee blogs...

Football Economics, February 02, 2004
This is not your typical Super Bowl story. Fascinating even if you think economics is boring....

Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet, January 15, 2004
If you like baseball and like country music - and I do - you might be interested in a new book, Baseball and Country Music, by Don Cusic, a music business professor, songwriter and country music historian . It looks to be a rather interesting read as it tracks the parallel histories of baseball and country music through most of the twentieth century....

Next Year, January 10, 2004
Thanks for a great season, guys. No complaints here. You'll get 'em next year....

Go Packers., January 09, 2004
I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, a big Eagles fan. Ron Jaworski, Harold Carmichael. Wilbert Montgomery, and then, later, Randall Cunningham, Cris Carter, and Buddy Ryan's awesome defense. Now I live and root for the Tennessee Titans, but still root for the current version of the Eagles to win their games - except when they play the Titans. But not this weekend. This weekend, I'm rooting for the Green Bay Packers to defeat...

How to Fix the BCS, January 06, 2004
Okay, admittedly I'm wading into a controversy waaaay outside my area of expertise. I don't spend all day mulling college football and debating the pros and cons of the bowl system versus a playoff, or exploring the intracacies of the multiple human and computer rankings that combine to form the Bowl Championship Series ranking and determine which teams play in the BCS National Championship bowl game. But after this year's BCS debacle, it is almost...

And Deservedly So, January 03, 2004
The toughest quarterback in the NFL has finally won the MVP award. Congratulations, Tennessee Titans QB Steve McNair....
