Titans Trip, September 07, 2005
Last Thursday my wife and I got to go to the Tennessee Titans' final pre-season game, against the Green Bay Packers (thanks to Mike Sechrist at WKRN!). We parked across the river from the stadium, near First Baptist Church which is about five blocks from the river, and then walked through downtown - past the Country Music Hall of Fame and the under-construction Schermerhorn Symphony Hall, and then over the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge to...
Full Moon, August 19, 2005
The rising full moon was orange in the sky when I photographed it tonight, but in the photo the moon showed up white, surrounded by orange-tinted clouds. I'm not sure why. You know, more than a third of a century after it happened, it's still extremely impressive that we actually sent some people up there to walk around and bring back some pieces of it. I hope I live long enough to enjoy the...
All's Fair, August 12, 2005
My wife and I took the kids to the Williamson County Fair last night. I'm not a big fan of county fairs, but it was fun. Here is a shots from high atop the Ferris wheel... My son didn't want to ride 'em last night, but now that we are no longer actually at the fair, my son wants to ride the bumblebees... Here's another shot of the Ferris wheel, taken while we were on...

Civic Pride, June 27, 2005
One of my favorite places along I-40 in Tennessee is about 45 minutes west of Nashville, a town called Bucksnort. Actually, I've never been to Bucksnort except for stopping at the gas station off the Bucksnort exit. But I like Bucksnort mainly because I can't believe anyone actually named their town Bucksnort. As Nashville continues to grow like kudzu, I have often said I know where the metro area's western expansion will come to...

Wednesday Barn Blogging, June 15, 2005
As promised yesterday, some photos of a barn-turned-rustic retreat center on a private farm south of Shelbyville, Tennessee, where my daughter and the rest of her track club spent last weekend on a retreat. You'll see just how rustic from the interior shot, although the ground level of the barn did have a paver floor, bathrooms with working plumbing, and a small kitchen. All images can be clicked to see a larger view....
Flower Blogging, June 14, 2005
Click images for larger view. This past weekend, I spent a good deal of time in the car on the roads between my home in the Nashville suburbs and Shelbyville, Tennessee, where my daughter spent the weekend on a retreat with her track club. It's a beautiful part of the state, dotted with picturesque hills and fields and farms and I photographed all most none of it because it was raining. However, at the...
Pillar Post, June 10, 2005
It's been a while since I last posted a photo from the construction site outside my office window - and a lot has happened since then. Having spent a few months blasting a deep hole in the ground and removing tons of rock, the construction company has now filled the hole with an underground parking garage. Shown above are two workers pouring concrete for one of the many steel-reinforced concrete pillars for the building,...
A Nashville Scene, June 09, 2005
I took my camera with me when I left campus for lunch today, on a hunch I might see something worth photographing. Sure enough, I was barely a block from campus, at a stop sign waiting to turn right, when this Mercedes came speeding past, with a guy standing up through the sunroof, filming. The camera - you can see the back of it there on his right shoulder if you click the picture...

Return to BlogNashville, June 07, 2005
I have - finally - gotten around to downloading and editing and posting a selection of photos from the BlogNashville conference. [Hey ... it was only a month ago!]. They're all posted in the extended-entry portion of this post. All images are approximately double in size if if right-clicked for downloading to your PC available, and hi-res versions are available if you need one....

Wednesday Barn Blogging, May 25, 2005
As promised, Here's another a shot of that old abandoned barn on Holly Tree Gap Road about half a mile west of Franklin Road in Williamson County, Tennessee. More later, if I have time to post them. This may be the only blogging I do today. UPDATE: Mark Rose is doing a little barn-blogging as well, and he's found a rather nice one "on the east side of Houston County, Tennessee, between Erin and...
Bonus Barn Blogging, May 23, 2005
Here's a shot of an old abandoned barn as seen through a barbed wire fence on Holly Tree Gap Road about half a mile west of Franklin Road in Williamson County, Tennessee. The site is less than 2 miles away from the largest shopping mall in Tennessee, but it feels a few decades removed from the modern fast growing suburb that surrounds it. More shots of this barn coming on Wednesday....

Wednesday Barn Blogging, April 27, 2005
This barn and the surrounding 110-acre estate called "The Meadows," located on the northwest quadrant of the intersection of Franklin Road and Mack Hatcher Parkway in Franklin, Tennessee, is owned by Jerry Meadows, who, it is reported, "describes himself as a marketing consultant helping others start their own business." Meadows is one of those very rare people who made a killing in multi-level marketing. He keeps a few horses and a few dozen cows...
Day-Late Barn Blogging, April 21, 2005
Oops. I forgot to post my Wednesday Barn-Blogging entry yesterday. This dying barn sits off West Harpeth Road south of Franklin. It is adjacent to some fast-growing subdivisions like this one so I can't imagine it being around for too many more years. It is a huge barn and an awesome sight. Look at the roofing tin and you can see how it's been rippled by high winds. I plan on returning to photograph...
Wednesday Barn Blogging, April 13, 2005
This barn sits smack-dab in the middle of a subdivision on the south side of Franklin Tennessee, off West Harpeth Road. You can see a little more of the subdivision here. The area is one that is rapidly filling with homes in the $300,000-$400,000 range, and higher, but much of the area is still farmland. It's a good bet that won't last long. And yes, that is a basketball net nailed to the front...
Bonus Barn-Blogging, April 07, 2005
Susan Kaestner writes: "Your barn blogging inspired me! I took this a week or so ago on the road from Thompson's Station on my way to Burwood. But I have one technical question: Do I get extra credit for including such a nice red cow?" Yes, Susan, you get extra credit for the red cow - for participating in barn-blogging, and for the red cow, you get not just one, but two free subscriptions...

Pictures of the Truth, April 02, 2005
8,989 different people saw 1Lt. Lance Frizzell's photos from Iraq that I posted here yesterday. That's 8,989 people who got a little different view of Iraq than that which the mainstream media doles out on a daily basis, thanks to Frizzell, who hails from Rutherford County, Tennessee, and is deployed with the Tennessee National Guard's 278th Armored Cavalry. Think about it - when is the last time you saw pictures of happy Iraqi children in...
The Story Behind The Pictures, April 01, 2005
After seeing some great photos of Iraqi kids, including inside an Iraqi school, at Lance Frizzell's blog yesterday, I emailed him for the story behind the pictures, and he sent an email that I've taken the liberty of editing here into a news report, accompanied by the pictures......

If you have already seen the latest installment of Blake Wylie's Thursday Car Blogging, and haven't yet had your fill of photos of old vehicles that have been or are being restored - or if you're one of those weird folk who think the '60s were better and you wish you had a cool VW Microbus to tool around in, you might want to check out this vehicle I spotted for sale today when...

Wednesday Barn Blogging, March 30, 2005
This is perhaps the most famous barn in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. The barn is one of three or four barns on a 579-acre horse farm owned by Cal Turner Jr., founder of the Dollar General retail stores. The property may be the most valuable large piece of real estate in Tennessee, and one of the most valuable anywhere in the South as it is one of the last large undeveloped tracts...
Barn-Blogging Bonus Edition, March 28, 2005

Photos from Iraq, March 25, 2005
Lance Frizzell has posted a nice photo essay from Iraq, showing American soldiers tending to an injured Iraqi. If I edited a daily newspaper, I'd be combing the blogosphere for photos like these taken by blogging soldiers who are from my newspaper's region, and for blog posts that tell the story of the war in the soldiers' own words, and then I'd be publishing a multi-page special section. And if I was a book publisher......

Click image for larger view. This barn is one of two on a farm located inside the city limits of Franklin, Tennessee, on Franklin Road just south of Mack Hatcher Parkway - about one mile north of Franklin's picturesque town square. It's a working farm - lots of horses and cattle. Here is another view, and here is a view of both barns....
Winning the War on Terror One Wheelchair At A Time, March 23, 2005
Lance Frizzell offers a 3,000-word response to the comments made by anti-war protestors at a recent Nashville anti-war rally. But it's a quick read because instead of words, Lance provides three pictures that ought to embarass the anti-war crowd into the silence for their ignorance....

Tuesday Wednesday Barn Blogging, March 16, 2005
This old barn is located off Lewisburg Pike near Mack Hatcher Parkway in Franklin, Tennessee, south of Nashville, on a small piece of farm property that has been for sale seemingly since shortly after the barn was new. Part of the property is in the Harpeth River floodplain, however, and the rest is hemmed in by a high-traffic road that very likely will be four-laned in the coming years. I was especially pleased by...
Nashville Scenes, March 11, 2005
I've been intending to take my digital camera out and photograph a variety of Nashville landmarks, the Nashville skyline, etc., but have not yet found the time to do so. Until I do, check out Chip Curley's rather extensive Nashville photo gallery. Chip Curley also maintains an extensive Nashville weblinks list here. More cool pictures of Nashville here. All of those pictures and many more from Nashville are on PBASE.com...
Photoblogging the Battle in Iraq, March 11, 2005
Lance Frizzell photoblogs the distribution of school supplies to children in northern Iraq by the U.S. military, and says, "pity there were no journalists around." Ah, but there was a journalist there, Lance. You. With your digital camera. That's the beauty of the blogosphere - it allows anyone to be a journalist. And in the case of the War on Terror, it is allowing the truth in all its complexity and variety and detail about...

Broken Barn, March 5, 2004 This aging, abandoned barn is located south of Nashville in Williamson County, Tennessee, a mile west of the Franklin Road/Moores Lane intersection. The barn sits in a tree-filled valley and during the summer is obscured by the foliage. I would love to know the story of this barn. Here's another view....

Friday Bird Blogging*, February 18, 2005
I spotted these cranes doing some sort of a mating dance outside my office window, high over the construction site where Belmont University is building a new academic building. Here is an additional view. And below is a photo of a construction worker on the permanent crane, which, when full-grown, will rise 200 feet from the below-ground-level base of the construction site. It will have a 219-foot beak boom. *Post title with apologies to...
More For Less, February 17, 2005
I bought my Canon EOS Digital Rebel camera too soon. Canon has come out with the new Digital Rebel XT, an 8-megapixel thing of newly-improved technological beauty at a very reasonable price, and cut the price of the Digital Rebel. But, then, any time you buy digital technology, you are only a few months away from a price cut, and the release of a new-and-improved version. I once paid $2,400 for a laptop that had...
Foggy Friday, February 04, 2005
Splitting the Pea Soup This is what it looked like out the windhshield of my car this morning as I drove to work. I live very near a river, and when there's a "dense fog advisory" for the Nashville area, it's even worse near where I live. The sun burned it off by about 9 a.m., however, and Friday was a gorgeous day for February - sunny, mid-50s with only a slight breeze. Can't...

Signs of Nashville, January 26, 2005
Clarity I photographed the detour sign at a road construction site on 12th Avenue today. Honestly, can you be sure you are supposed to turn left? So, I had a little fun with the image. In case the sign was upside down: Er, or maybe this was how it was supposed to go:...

I don't get credit for framing the photo with the crane apparatus - it was parked outside my window! Click to enlarge image. By the way, Sharp as a Marble caught me yesterday using a photo of an explosion at a Michigan Taco Bell and claiming it was taken at the construction site outside my window. What can I say? Read Sharp's explanation here......

The Road Less Taken, January 18, 2005
View across an unnamed valley N. Berry's Chapel Road, Brentwood, TN, Jan. 17, 2004 Monday was the first day in the entire month of January in the Nashville area that dawned sunny and stayed sunny all day. While out running errands I slipped down a side road that I'd never taken before and crested a hill on a narrow two-lane and saw this view off to the right. You'd never know you were less...
Canon vs. Nikon, January 13, 2005
South Knox Bubba has a very detailed post comparing the Nikon D70 and the Canon 20D digital cameras. But he chose an apples to oranges comparison. The Nikon D70 is a 6.1-megapixel camera. The Canon 20D is an 8.2-megapixel camera. Unless you're shooting professionally or taking pictures you plan to have printed the size of billboards, you don't need an 8.2-megapixel camera. I considered the Nikon D70 before opting to purchase the Canon EOS Digital...
