Blanco: Nagin Should Have Used the Buses

Is Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babbling Blanco distancing herself from New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin over his failure to use his city's hundreds of buses to evacuate his city's poor before Hurricane Katrina struck?

Perhaps:

New Orleans' Mayor Ray Nagin is facing criticism for not using buses to evacuate citizens before Hurricane Katrina struck. In the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina, Mayor Ray Nagin did not use hundreds of buses that were sitting in bus yards, some less than a mile from the Superdome, to evacuate citizens who were too poor to make their way out of the city.

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco commented, "The buses could have saved an estimated 20,000 people if they had been used for emergency evacuations which President Bush had declared two days before Katrina hit." Thursday, after the storm, Blanco by executive order used school buses for evacuation.

I don't know the credibility of the news source for Blanco's quote and would love to find confirmation that she said it. But the rest of the post is an excellent summary of the facts surrounding the unused school buses tht could have - and should have - been used to save thousands of New Orleans' poorest residents from the hurricane.

Bill: Thanks for the work you are doing on this important story. You and Junkyard Blog are an excellent primary resource for folks like me who want a comprehensive understand of this issue.

We're coming up on the 4th anniversary of the September 11th atrocities on Sunday. The contrast with how that event was handled and the aftermath of Katrina is instructive.

There is so much wrong with what has happened since Aug 29. And with time, the nation will see how screwed up the politics in my home town are. W should have Federalized the situation from the beginning and taken away all rights left to LA and NO. But, the bus picture speaks volumes. Question, as I posted on my blog, why did Jefferson Parish move its busses to Baton Rouge? Why did the other parishes get ready and Orleans did not? It's ain't race! It's imcompetence and every elected memebr of Congress from LA, from 1970 to the present should be in front of Congress to account for the list of incomplete Corp of Engineer Projects. Eveyone in the OMB should be skinned. The Levee Authority in NO should be disbanded and replcaed with a Fed Agency immediatley. Great Post - Great Blog! Keep The Faith!
