Folkies, Protestors and Fred Phelps

You ought to check out Illinois blogger John Ruberry's Marathon Pundit blog even if you aren't from Illinois. Ruberry emailed to alert me that wacko "preacher" Fred Phelps and his merry band of idiots are planning to picket the funerals of two Tennessee soldiers who were killed in Iraq.

Let me state my opinion of Fred Phelps and his cultists as plainly as I can: Fred Phelps is a walking, talking, hate-filled crime against both humanity and God.

I'm tempted to go to one of those funerals and hold up a sign reminding Phelps' Wackos that greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for a friend, and the soldiers whose funerals they are picketing laid down their lives as part of America's noble effort to befriend the people of Iraq.

Rubbery also had this to say about "anacronistic folkie Joan Baez" showing up to join Cindy Sheehan's anti-war protest in Crawford, Texas:

This ought to double her monthly CD sales to maybe, 10 a month. When will Country Joe & the Fish show up?
Hah.

John at Marathon Pundit posted about your site and it's a fine one, I must say. Great job and I'll be back.

Fred Phelps is a bigger idiot than Pat Robertson (who would have thought that was even possible?) and a bigger embarassment. He knows nothing of Bible Christianity. Maybe he and that bunch he calls a church should stop waving their Bibles and actually read them for a change.

Not a personal attack, but Baez was really mistaken about the war in Veitnam, in so much as profiting from protesting that war to when she and her audience never had to put boots on the ground then and her left leaning attitudes now. Too bad she was not demogoged like traitor jane and Kerry! R. Nimms Simi Valley, Ca 93065

I sent this info to the leader of the Tennessee chapter of Protest Warrior. Operation Peaceful Funeral is in the works. I wish I could be there ...

I realize that the first response is to want to go out and to protest the nutballs who are doing this...but I think we also have to consider the families in all of this. Give them the privacy and dignity to grieve.

I blogged about it earlier today...

OH, Come on Bill - "noble effort to befriend the people of Iraq" - what a load of crap.

A van of Phelps' disgusting cult picketed the funeral of a soldien in McKenzie, TN, already this month. Although I have moved from the area, I was proud to hear that not only did the locals pack the funeral, they stopped and sang "God Bless America" at the protesters when Phelps' band tried to incite them to violence.

Should you decide to stop by Phelp's web site, I recommend that you keep a barf bag handy. A wacho-ectomy on his site would leave nothing but a blank page. (And I am being kind!!)

I hate this war and I think we were wrong getting into it. BUT, I support every soldier, sailor and Marine who's involved in it. Our men and women in uniform are the best in the world. They deserve the respect of every American.

What Phelps and his "church" are doing is evil, pure and simple. If he truly believes God hates America, as his picketers' signs read, then he should go somewhere else. I wonder how long Putin would tolerate Phelps' tactics in Russia.

I've heard the Baptist denomination has disavowed any connection with Phelps, and call his group a "cult." If this cult were to go the way of some other cults, like the Davidians, I don't think I'd mind.
