Sponge Bob

Chattanooga Pulse, that city's alt-weekly paper, has put Senate candidate Bob Corker on its cover this week. Well, sort of...

spongebob.jpgCorker’s opponents have not forgotten the candidate who during his 1994 senate run (which he eventually lost to Frist) said he viewed abortion “as a personal issue, not a government issue.”

"[Bob’s] got a problem," top Bryant advisor Sonny Scott said last week. "He’s in a conservative Republican primary, in a conservative state, and he’s trying to pretend that he didn’t run left of Bill Frist on abortion a decade ago and that if he spends enough money, people will believe that he is hard right pro-life. But he’s not going to be able to spend this away.

"Voters don’t like dishonest people, regardless of what side of an issues they’re on," Scott said. "And that’s the danger of Bob Corker; he’s misleading about his record and he’s becoming a liability in this election. We’re just trying to get Bob to stop hiding behind his checkbook and start providing some answers," he added.

Corker's campaign has - so far - been all about fundraising. His website contains not a single bit of information about Corker's stance on the issues.

On one super-hot issue, it took Corker an entire month to come out against the Supreme Court's Kelo decision granting government virtually unlimited power to seize private property and give it to another owner, such as a wealthy real estate developer, for any reason the government deems valid - and, even then, Corker's vapid response showed little real understanding of the issue or deep-seated committment to fix it if he is elected to the U.S. Senate.

You'd think a wealthy real estate developer running for the Senate would have had a little more to say about Kelo than that.

Corker Insists He's Conservative

Former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker, now on a quest to be a U.S. Senator, assured members of the Chattanooga Pachyderm Club on Monday that he is a conservative.

"I will be a conservative vote," said Mr. Corker, who said he is pro-life, for a balanced budget and low taxes, and a man of faith and prayer.

Primary opponents Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary have painted Mr. Corker as a moderate, and they say they are the conservative choice in the race for the seat now held by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.

Mr. Corker was asked about being pro-choice in a 1994 Senate run, when Bill Frist captured the seat. He said even then he personally was pro-life. He said he now has "beautiful 16 and 17 year old daughters and am in a different place spiritually."

The highly successful developer said he strongly opposes the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing use of eminent domain for development purposes. He urged state legislators to pass bills not allowing such use of eminent domain.

Mr. Corker stressed his background in business as well as his service as state finance commissioner and as mayor. He said during his tenure in the state, finances were in good shape and there was no tax increase.

He said during his four years as mayor, the size of the budget rose only 1 percent and violent crime went down 51 percent.

Mr. Corker said he wants to take action to control federal spending, and he said he will work to get judges approved "who will interpret the law and not create law."

The speaker told of helping to start Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise after going on a church mission trip to Haiti and seeing the need for housing for those not able to afford it.

He told of saving $8,000 over four years and starting a construction firm. He said his first contract was for $17,596 for an addition at the senior center in Soddy-Daisy. He said he got a break when he was awarded a contract with Krystal installing drive-in windows. He said he drove a white Ford pickup around the Southeast doing that job. He said his firm eventually grew to 18 states.
