You have got to be kidding me! When are you attack dogs going to stop and tell the truth? Talking about policy and the issues is one thing, but making up wacky conspiracy theories is another. Harold Ford Jr. is his own man--plain and simple. He is not his uncle. Harold has been in the US Congress for 8 years and has a cleaner record than anyone around. For you or anyone else to try to associate him with illegal activity is wrong on many levels. Congressman Ford's father lives in Miami and he often visits him there. Is there now harm in visiting one's family? The general election is still over a year away, yet you have already personally attacked Congressman Ford enough for 6 years. I am glad Congressman Ford has the dignity to take the high road and talk about the issues that face Tennessee, not personally attack his opponents and detractors. Posted by: Chris D. Jackson at July 15, 2005 10:03 PMIt stumps me to no end that local media hasn't run any stories on this. (That I can find.) If I had to guess, there must be something badly explosive to this, which is why there is no reporting, not even a denial story or a "there is no story" story. Thanks for the link, Bill. Posted by: mike hollihan at July 15, 2005 10:59 PMChris, some of the bribes allegedly accepted by John Ford and the other indicted lawmakers are alleged to have been given and accepted in Miami. That's the connection. People are wondering if they happened at Harold Ford Sr's house. Meanwhile, what's up with Ford Junior spending campaign funds on such lavish hotel digs, esp. in Miami, where his dad lives? Junior may be as clean as the driven snow, but his family is widely viewed as corrupt, and that's the baggage he has to carry in this race, and that's why people are intrigued by unanswered questions such as the interesting Miami tidbits. Asking the questions is not a personal attack. Posted by: Bill at July 16, 2005 12:12 AMDo you or anyone else have evidence that any bribes were made or accepted in Miami? I haven't seen any information that said that. As far as I can tell, that is just rumor and hearsay. Harold is his own man. He is not his father or uncle. He speaks for himself. And like I said, he has a clean record. I don't think this campaign should be about Harold's family. I hope you and others don't make it about it either. He shouldn't have to deal with that. He has new ideas that he wishes to present to Tennessee and they should be heard. The people of the state deserve an election that is issue rich--not one of personal attacks and conspiracies. Congressman Ford has the dignity to take the high road and talk about the issues that face Tennessee, not personally attack his opponents and detractors. You are kidding right? You mean issues like supporting the Village ( aka the government ) to take your land/or home and give it to someone with a bigger checkbook. Nothing personal Chris, but here's hoping the next house, they the Village, just has to have, is your mother's home, then watch you scream. and guess what? I will be screaming right along with you. So will every conservative I know. elections matter. Posted by: Paul at July 16, 2005 01:02 AMRead the indictiment of John Ford, which you can access here by clicking his picture. From Page 5: On or about December 17, 2004, the defendant John Ford had a conversation in Miami, Florida with a representative of E-Cycle and further discussed the timing of the bill that John Ford was to propose in the Tennessee Senate On this date, in Miami, Florida, the defendant John Ford received $5,000 in cash from this individual for John Ford's assistance concerning the bill. Why Miami? The logical assumption is that John Ford was at his brother's Miami estate. Harold Ford Jr. also travels often to Miami, as shown by his campaign expenditures disclosure. The simple and reasonable question is, did John Ford accept a bribe at his father's home - and was Junior there when it happened? As a side issue, why is it that Junior has to go have fundraisers in Miami? Ed Bryant so far has raising most of his money from actual Tennesseans. Posted by: Bill at July 16, 2005 08:40 AMChris asked, "Do you or anyone else have evidence that any bribes were made or accepted in Miami?" and I see Bill remembered it from the indictment itself! Tim Willis, the FBI's front man, made several trips to Miami. While there, he was also seen in the company of Shelby County Commissioner Michael Hooks, who is widely seen in Shelby County as one of the next folks to have an indictment handed down. Hooks explanation for the meeting was strange at best, or just strained. Local alt-weekly writer tried to match his visit with some film festivals (Hooks is an aspiring actor) with no luck. Willis only reason for travel to Miami is meetings with those being stung by the FBI. If the whole E-Cycle sting was entirely a Tennessee operation, why were they travelling to Miami to meet? Where did they meet and stay while in Miami is another of the great unanswered questions of the Tennessee Waltz investigation. I'm not accusing, I'm asking. For newspapers and television news, this is an easy question to answer. So, why no answers two months later? Posted by: mike hollihan at July 16, 2005 12:10 PMYou know, Chris, Harold is the guy who came out in favor of the famous Kelo decision right after it was handed down by SCOTUS. A decision that has been massively denounced by every other politician that I've heard. Now, do you *still* want to talk about this guy on his personal merits? Didn't think so... Posted by: Michael Chaney at July 16, 2005 01:20 PMAgain, you all are trying to make some kind of connection taht is not there. Yes, Harold often visits his dad in Miami. Yes, it appears that John Ford was in Miami when a deal went down. But how does that implicate Harold in any way? It doesn't. You want him to 'answer' to these questions, but he shouldn't because there is nothing to them. Also, the Congressman has fully answered any and all questions dealing with Kelo. He has pointed out where he thinks the ruling went too far and he also pointed out what positives are found in the ruling. He strongly supports homeowners and business owners and is willing to sit down in Congress to formulate a policy in regard to this matter that makes sense for everyone. Posted by: Chris D. Jackson at July 16, 2005 04:28 PMHollihan's point, and it is valid, is that we don't know if there's nothing to it because the press has not yet looked into it. All we have is the assertion of wide-eyed young Ford fans who say there is no "there" there. As for Kelo, a group of congressfolks did work out an initial legislative response to Kelo. Ford voted against it. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at July 16, 2005 06:11 PMI can accept that Harold Ford Jr. is his own man. I also accept Chris' view that a man should not be judged by the actions of his family. But...I don't see much evidence or public statements that Ford Jr. condemns the actions of his family either. Speaking for myself, if a member of my family is a thug, our bloodline is not enough to cause me to look the other way--and perhaps, if the crimes egregious enough--to cause me to completely break-off familial ties. If he is really "pure" as Mr. Jackson says, then Ford Jr. should be out saying: "If my uncle is proven guilty, then he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law." But Jr. is not--because he wants to benefit from the finanacial graft and corruption of his family. You just can't have it both ways. Posted by: Terry at July 17, 2005 07:56 AMPost a comment
