« Sunny Days Ahead | Main | "He was not on our list of priorities" » July 13, 2005RolledThe retail tire business is a scam. We're about to put four new tires on my wife's Mercury Mountaineer. I called two local tire-sellers for prices on the exact same tires, installed, with tax and everything. At the first place, they said the tires with white lettering cost $30 more than the same tires in blackwall. At the second place, the lady I spoke to said the blackwall tires were about $20 more apiece than the white-lettered tires. So then my wife calls the second place, and speaks to a different person - a man, this time - and asks him there's a difference between the same make and size of tire if they are blackwalled or white-lettered tires, in terms of performance or whatever, and is told that, no, the tires are identical - and if you want blackwall, they just install them with the white lettering facing inward. And, he didn't bother to mention, they charge you $20 more per identical tire. She asked if he could explain why one place we had called said the white-lettered tires were more, and another place said the blackwalled tires were more - causing the guy to splutter. I'm not sure we're going to be doing business with them. Posted in Miscellaneous

Go to Ben Little's Marathon shop on Harding Place, right by I-65. He's the most honest man in the world...and that's saying something for a mechanic. He'll treat you right. Posted by: The Groundskeeper at July 13, 2005 04:05 PMJust wait until you bring it in. That's when they claim the wear patterns on your old tires indicate you need new shock absorbers. Posted by: nash at July 13, 2005 07:41 PMCall TCI and ask for Craig Davis. I have been doing business with them for about 4 years. He'll treat you like you're his best friend with respect. They're so good I have his number saved in my SIM on the cell phone. They are located on Fesslers Lane just off the I-40 exit, which is about 10 minutes from Belmont. Their number is 255-6353. Posted by: Tim at July 14, 2005 08:09 PMI recently went to a tire place because I needed one tire. One front tire was damaged, the other is fairly new and in good shape. The guy told me he could only sell me two, because "it's important for both of them to be the same brand." I went elsewhere. Posted by: Paul at July 15, 2005 03:58 PMPost a comment
