Ford Jr.'s Colleagues "Stunned" By His Approval of Kelo Decision Allowing Goverment to Take Your Property and Give It To Someone Else

Columnist Robert Novak reports that U.S. Rep. Harold Ford's Jr.'s endorsement of the Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. New London "stunned" his Congressional colleagues. Ford, D-Memphis, currently running for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee, praised Kelo, which gives government virtually unlimited power to take private property and transfer it to another owner such as a private real estate developer for any reason, as a "positive" decision. Four other candidates running for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee - former GOP congressmen Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary, current GOP state Rep. Beth Harwell and current Democratic state Sen. Rosalind Kurita, all condemned Kelo, while former Chattanoga mayor Bob Corker, a Republican who made his fortune as a real estate developer, has ignored repeated requests for a statement of his position on Kelo.

Ford, incidentally, also voted against legislation that would have increased protection for private property rights.

Bill: I have heard from a few Democrats who were eager to see Ford Jr win, ushering in a new era for Tennessee Democrats with a more moderate, conservative tune say they would now vote against him.

I do not expect Kurita to pose a serious threat, but a Democrat who may wish to to look statewide in the future could jump in and perhaps knock him out.

What is next for Ford Jr if he loses? His Uncle John's legal problems, Kelo and Hillary 2008 do not bode well for his future. Expect to see Barack Obama down in Tennessee campaigning for Ford. It may be the holy trinty of the collapse of the Ford Dynasty. Then again, it could give rise to the next generation of Ford Family Political leaders. Tennessee voters will speak and the voice will be heard across the nation. --JC

Did you HONESTLY expect Harold Ford to support anything regarding the welfare of the average American citizen in Tennessee? This is the same guy who voted for bad legislation and represents people who are going to be harmed by that legislation the most. It's easy to support legislation that harms poor and working class people when you expect it to have no effect on you personally.

If Sandra Day O'Connor's vigorous dissent in the Kelo decision is any indication, she's hightailing it out of DC to go back to Arizona and protect her land. Even Clarence Thomas is dismayed by the fact that his Judicial colleagues on the bench voted for Kelo - cause that ruling means that the government can take HIS HOUSE - regardless of him being a Supreme Court Justice.

Here's something that's real simple in keeping the fire under Ford, Jr's ass - make him give an account of his support for such egregious examples of legislation, and ask him if he would ever be affected by that legislation, should he be forced to return to private life.

I think you already have your answer...
