You Have The Right To Kiss Your Rights Goodbye

Private property rights in American are dead, killed by the five most liberal justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. Blake Wylie, who rightly calls the court's ruling "a national tragedy," has numerous links. I've indicated in the past that I might back Colorado Gov. Bill Ownens or Condi Rice for president in 2008. Scrap all that. I'll be backing the most libertarian candidate for the nomination. And if the Republican Party wants to hold power much longer, it will re-align its platform and agenda with its libertarian wing, and campaign on a promise to appoint judges who will protect your rights against an ever more rapacious government.

UPDATE: Much more here. And Volokh is indispensable on a day like this.

Not to lower the level of discourse and certainly not to defend the haphazard taking of private property, but someone might want to research what happened to all the property just north of the state capitol and the current James Robertson Boulevard that was taken by Nashville in the name of urban renewal in the 60's. Did some of that property end up in the hands of private developers?

Bill,

Know what the even more interesting part of this is? This is only the first rancid decision in what will be a series of decisions that will be collectively known as The Week The Supreme Court Angered America.

Think about the tap dancin' on land mines SCOTUS is performing: Gonzales v Castle Rock (police requirement to enforce restraining orders), BOTH Ten Commandments cases, Kelo, Raich, and even Grokster. Merely following past precedent in the first four will ignite everyone from the Christian Coalition to Domestic Victims' rights groups. And a decision to cover somebody's corporate rear end in Grokster will likely change the face of tech advances in this country, and not for the good.

You hit the nail on the head, Bill. I have long identified myself with the Repulican Party, but these recent events have led me to the conclusion that a "meaningless" vote for a Libertarian candidate will show my disgust. If enough people have the courage to do that, we can effect some change.
