This May Offend You

A case of Koran "desecration" . The Tennessean reports:

koran.jpg"It's in the heart of every Muslim. We respect and we love (the Koran) more than our families," said Ab-dishakur Ibrahim, imam of the Al-Farooq mosque. "I don't know why anyone would do this. I can't comprehend it."
Well, there's your problem right there. You love a book - paper with ink on it - more than you love your families. Perhaps that helps explain the routine oppression of women in Muslim cultures.

See, in my religion - Christianity, perhaps you've heard of it - we love what's in the book because we love the author of the book, but we don't "love" the physical book itself to an irrational degree. The Bible teaches us to love each other, not make physical objects - statues, temples, a book - into an idol. "The Word" came from God, but the book that holds those words came from the printing presses at Zondervan.

The Nashville Koran defacement case is being investigated as a "hate crime," the news reports says. But if the stupid person who did it had instead just submerged the Koran in a bucket of urine and put it in an art gallery it would be called "art" and he'd get a federal grant to pay for it.

I'm sorry, I can't call it "desecration" because to use that word is to tacitly accept the Muslim view that the Koran is sacred, but if somebody defaced the Koran in order to make a threat of bodily harm or other criminal activity, he should be prosecuted for making a threat. But defacement of religious items should not be a crime in America. Andres Serrano's Piss Christ was highly offensive to me but, while "art" such as that should not be federally funded, neither should it be criminalized. Neither should the defacement or destruction of the Bible, the Torah, the books of Hinduism ... or the Koran.

Such defacement is certainly offensive to the person whose faith book is being defaced and also offensive to people of all faiths who believe in tolerance and respectful treatment of those with whom we disagree. But this is America, where people of all faiths or no religion all have the right of free speech, a right that includes the right to make offensive statements - even if that statement is in the form of soaking a crucifix in urine, or defacing a Koran with flame or feces.

In America there is a constitutional right to believe and practice your religion freely, and a constitutional right to free speech. There is no constitutional right to be not offended.

UPDATE: Donald Sensing wonders if the defaced Koran might have been defaced by a Muslim.

The whole thing smells fishy to me. The partially-burnt Quran stayed on the step at least from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday noon. The neighborhood is mostly Muslim, though not exclusively. Who would have a spare copy of the Quran but, ISTM, a Muslim? My prediction, based on not much more than gut instinct and serving two years on the staff of a federal law-enforcement agency, is that this deed was done by a Nashville Muslim and was part of small but deliberate effort to self-victimize the Nashville Muslim community, sort of like this. This strikes me as a publicity stunt on the part of a few Muslim youth, I am going to guess in their mid- to late teens.

But the fact that the DA’s office is seriously discussing sending someone to prison - not jail, prison - for this incident is very disturbing and illustrates the bankruptcy of the whole idea of "hate crimes."

Indeed.

Sensing notes that the Council on American-Islamc Relations is now trumpeting the Nashville case as proof of "growing anti-Muslim sentiment" in America.

"It would be difficult to come up with a scenario in which this incident was not bias-motivated," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. "Our nation's leaders need to address what seems to be a growing level of intolerance and anti-Muslim sentiment in American society." Awad asked people of conscience in Tennessee and throughout the nation to repudiate anti-Muslim bigotry by obtaining and reading a Qur’an.
Sure, Mr. Awad. Right after you and every other Muslim repudiates Islamist anti-Christian and anti-Jewish bigotry, violence and terrorism by obtaining and reading a Torah and a Bible.

CAIR has launched a campaign, called "Explore the Qur’an," designed to provide free Qur’ans to Americans of all faiths. I think I'm going to start a campaign called "Explore God's Word," to provide free Bibles to Muslims in America. I'm sure that will go over well with CAIR.

UPDATE: According to news reports, some 's Muslim community are uppppsettt because they had to dial 911 to get the cops' attention. They called 911 over a torn-up book. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one

They probably should never give a Koran to my kids - they tear up books all the time.

Is it acceptable for a protester to burn the American flag?

Posted by: SemiPundit at June 23, 2005 12:21 PM

Koran defacement a hate crime? I wonder if shock rocker Marilyn Manson could have been prosecuted for a hate crime when he stood before an audience at the MTV Video awards and ripped pages from the Bible?

Posted by: Jay at June 23, 2005 12:32 PM

Semi - Is it "acceptable" is not the right question. I would be offended by a flag-burning, but it should not be a crime to burn the American flag.

Jay: We're headed toward a day when the only people you can't commit a hate crime against are Christians.

Your smug superiority belies a bumper sticker I recently saw that also reflects the thinking of a lot of fundamentalists - IF IT AIN'T THE KING JAMES, IT AIN'T THE BIBLE

Otherwise I agree with a lot of what you said. Hate crimes are a slippery slope, we need to simply punish the criminal conduct and leave the moralizing out of of it.

If it is such a horrific offense to do harm to thier book, why are the insurgents/terrorists in Iraq blowing up mosques?

Posted by: RustyO at June 23, 2005 01:46 PM

Bill- How do you feel about burning crosses?

RustyO - If murder is so offensive to Christians who served in the military, why did Timothy McVeigh blow up the Murrah Building in Oklahoma?

Posted by: Kevin Newman at June 23, 2005 02:50 PM

"Irrational" is the key word.

Posted by: Donna Locke at June 23, 2005 03:56 PM

It's easy to say "It's just a book", but it's quite possible that someone did it in order to threaten the Muslims. The first thing I thought about was cross-burning, but, well, wood is easy to come by. So it does seem fishy.

Now, as for you, Kevin, Tim McVeigh wasn't a Christian. Besides the obvious reason based on his actions, he was an agnostic by his own confession.

RustyO's question stands, but it's rhetorical and the answer is "it really doesn't bother them." But we knew that.

Because of the brouhaha over desecrated Korans, I can easily picture a group of Tennessee's finest red-necks deciding this would be the best way to "send a message" to the "A-rabs."

They got out the yellow pages and make a few calls on where to find a Koran, all the while guys in the background were snickering over their "genius" plan. They all loaded up into a car and drove on down to the Koran store. Then they argued over who was actually gonna go in and buy it - accompanied by more childish snickering once someone actually went in. Of course while facing the "A-rab" the little red-neck would be completely respectful - probably even saying "thank you." Then in the middle of the night, they went to the "A-rab" neighborhood and destroyed the Koran, the whole time they laughed it up and drank cheep as beer. During the drive home they make all sorts of lude and crude comments about everyone that wasn't a "red-blooded" amuricun. yuck yuck yuck. "Just some good ol' boys - never meanin' no harm..."

And, I can see how the Muslims would interprete this little calling card as a threat to their persons.

I admit the 911 call was inappropriate - 862-8600 for non-emergency calls. Non-emergency calls can take several hours to be responded to.

Religion of Peace my butt. Interesting that they called 911 and the press. . . .

Since they love the book more than their own families, I guess that explains why they strap the explosives to their kids instead of the book.

Tim McVeigh-exception

Muslim extremism-rule

Posted by: Drake at June 24, 2005 09:25 AM

Drake - ignorant bigot

upon further reading, it seems that McVeigh was a Catholic who went through confirmation and later stopped going to church, said he was agnostic as an adult, and then took last rites before being executed.

I think some are missing Bill's original point. Without specifically threatening (directly or indirectly) anyone, placing a charred Quran smeared in feces on the door steps of a mosque is no crime other than trespassing. Conspiracy theories aside, this was most likely a stupid prank.

As for the cross burning comparison, I think this is a valid one IF it is shown that this act was done to intimidate. But if I went on the street corner outside a mosque to burn a Quran, I would not be committing a hate crime.
