Sit-In

Sharon Cobb has an update from the TennCare cuts protest at the governor's office. It seems the official policy of the administration of Gov. Phil Bredesen toward the protestors is to starve them out. Given that these protesters are people who are beset with various illnesses, that's pretty macabre.

I just wanted to let you all know that Governor Bredesen met with the TennCare advocates this afternoon at 2:00 pm. He listened and addressed their concerns for over 45 minutes in an extremely public forum with no less than five television cameras and several newspaper reporters. Since you all have been "reporting" updates from the capitol all day, I hope that you will all report about this meeting in as open, truthful, and throughly pubilc manner in which you have reported on all of the other details surrounding this protest. I would be surprised if any other Governor or public official would have addressed this group in such a public and straightforward manner. We should all be thankful that Phil Bredesen is our Governor and not another typical politician.

It would seem that you have reported it yourself, anonymous, and even added a plug for Gov. Bredesen, whose meat-axe approach to "reforming" TennCare has put a few hundred thousand sick, old, disabled and poor people at great medical risk.

Would he have met with those folks without their sit-in and its attendant media coverage? Not likely. So, don't praise Phil for meeting with the people - praise the people for having the courage to force such a meeting.

From what I heard on the radio, the people are apparently still there. Maybe we should take food to them.

Lydia...uh...I mean anonymous, posted exactly the same post on my site. Glad to see we have them spinning. Just wait until they find out (this morning) Michael Moore has posted one of my stories on his site along with my link.
My my my... :)

Michael, very generous of you to offer to bring them something to eat. We brought them food, but the troopers wouldn't let us bring it to them. State employees ate and drank freely in front of the protesters. However, when I was down there tonight, it appeared to me that they had water. (You can see them in the window...have it posted on my site)
This morning should be quite interesting. If Phil doesn't agree to a real public hearing, the protesters are staying.

Sharon thinks the above comment from "anonymous" is from Lydia Lenker, the governor's press secretary. That's a good guess, but not right. I did a whois lookup on the IP address of the poster and found that it came from someone working for the State of Tennessee, Department of Finance and Administration. So, it's not Lenker - but it IS someone trying to spin for the governor.

Interesting.

The "anonymous" commenter has posted a total of three comments here at BillHobbs.com, all in the last few weeks. Two under the name "anonymous," and one under the name "james".

Can you track IP addresses, Bill?

Posted by: brittney at June 22, 2005 11:01 AM

MovableType's comments feature captures the IP address from which a comment is posted, so that if someone is spamming, their IP address can be banned from future comments.

I took the IP address, did a WHOIS lookup on it, and found that the IP address is assigned to a computer at the F&A department. That's all.

I was just curious to see if it might indeed by the gov's flack who was commenting.

Argh. I wish I were computer savvy! Good work, Bill.

So, it's David G. or someone in his office, yes?
