Gov. Harwell?

State Rep. Beth Harwell, former chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party, is edging closer to running for governor instead of the U.S. Senate. I think that's a wise move - for her and for the Republican Party in Tennessee. She'll have an easier time defeating wounded incumbent Gov. Phil Bredesen than she would have capturing the GOP's U.S. Senate nomination in 2006. A moderately conservative Republican, Harwell will be able to present a favorable contrast to the cold dollarcrat image that Bredesen has managed to cement with his refusal to entertain any reform proposals that might reduce TennCare costs will sparing hundreds of thousands of sick, elderly, poor and disabled people from losing their healthcare coverage.

I agree that Harwell for Governor would be good for the Republican Party. I hope she does it. In fact, I am pretty excited about the prospect of her candidacy.

One would hope that if the Republicans put up a candidate for governor, he or she will be an actual Republican.

In any event, I've never been impressed by Beth Harwell. I'd rather see Ron Ramsey or someone else.

I'm always more swayed by draft movements that happen when there are already heavy-hitter candidates than by those draft movements whose existence is laced with panic.

I'd guess that Ron Ramsey has a little more name recognition than Scooter Clippard, but none of the candidates posed thus far -- save the ace-in-waiting, Fred Dalton Thompson -- has the face value to go head-to-head with even a weakened Governor Phil, not even Beth Harwell.

Run with the "moderately conservative" option, though. She may even get my vote, if things continue the way they have been going.

Dr. Harwell would be an excellent candidate. And she is a real Republican. She is someone with common sense and integrity, something we cannot say about some of those who now profess to be Republicans.

If the Republicans want a candidate with substance, she'd be an excellent choice. She is not part of the Christian Coalition crowd, is a real person of faith and morality, and lives in the real world. Those are pluses in my book.
