Teaching Bloggers How To Shoot the News

WKRN continues to enhance its relationship with the Nashville-area blogosphere. Having hosted Nashville’s first meet-up for bloggers in February, and hired a full-time blogger in May to oversee the new Nashville blogosphere portal NashvilleIsTalking.com, WKRN now is planning a one-day class in early July, "Video 101 for bloggers," taught by the news channel's chief photographer. Class size is limted to 20, and is by invitation only - if you didn't get an evite, don't look at me.

I predict WKRN will reap huge dividends down the road from efforts such as this - such as landing well-shot video exclusives by local bloggers that its competitors can't get. And the impact on market share and audience loyalty of involving the audience in the production of its product can not be under-estimated.

I have mixed emotions about the role "Brittney" plays at this site. She seems to oversee the site for WKRN and as such could reasonably be seen as voicing the station's opinion. If that is true, can WKRN really be that liberal?

John - Brittney has no role at this site. She runs a blog at NashvilleIsTalking.com for WKRN. She is not and is not supposed to be an objective reporter. She is liberal, and I think WKRN might ought to consider adding a conservative blogger to the NashvilleIsTalking blog to balance things out (although many blogs in the Nashville blogosphere are not about politics and NashvilleIsTalking ought to cover those more as well.)

I'm going to start using quotes around my name all the time.

I did not mean "this site" to be BillHobbs. I understand you have no affiliation with NashvilleIsTalking. But Brittney's consistent very liberal voice on that site could give one the impression that her views are blessed by WKRN..which they may or may not be. Her liberal views could have the full backing of Young Broadcasting.

John:

Brittney was hired by WKRN to be a blogger. As far as we know she is the first blogger hired by a television station to blog about the local blogosphere. We created NashvilleIsTalking (NiT) because I firmly believe that bloggers are the catalysts of Citizens Media which will change broadcast journalism forever. Since we are the first we are making a lot of this up as we go along. Brittney's views on NiT don't represent the station's. She is writing a blog and her political feelings are very transparent. Bill makes the suggestion that we should balance this with a conservative blogger and that may be what we do. I view NiT as completely divorced from the newsroom. Matter of fact there was a brief dustup from the newsroom the first time Brittney pointed to stories on the WSMV and WTVF websites. I had to explain that she is not an in-house shill for the station. I don't agree with all of Brittney's comments but that's the beauty of the blog, I can go to the comments section and add my two cents. When Brittney was hired her political leanings where never discussed. She got the job because of her knowledge of blogs, her terrific writing skills and a sharp and inquisitive mind.

May I humbly suggest, Mr. Sechrist (I assume), that you eliminate the "Operated and maintained by..." information rather than continuing to allow some of us to believe the station is taking an editorial stance by endorsing her liberal posts. Unless, of course, you intend to do just that.

OK - on the lighter side - how do Lynnette and I get an invite?
