CNN Eyes the Blogosphere

cnnblogo.jpgThe Time/Warner Division of Turner Broadcasting - which owns CNN - has a job opening for a "Blog Reporter/Producer" to be based in Washington, DC.

Here's the job description:

TimeWarner Division Turner Broadcasting
Location United States - District of Columbia - Washington
Requisition # 42128BR
Position Type Full Time
Posting Job Description Qualifications: Five years network television journalism experience or local on-air reporting experiences required. Outstanding computer knowledge; expertise in blogs and with extensive understanding of the blogosphere; strong on-air performance skills also required. Experience reporting on blogs preferred. Knowledge of American politics and of key players in Washington also important.

Duties: Producer/reporter covering web-logs (blogs), pod-casts, and other internet-based forms of new media. The Blog Reporter/Producer will locate, research, and report on blogs and web sites that include news, politics, policy, commentary, and other information of value to our viewers. The results will be daily television segments reporting on this new and important area of the media. This person will be responsible for producing both the editorial content and also the graphic and video elements necessary to develop each segment. Will appear on air regularly.

Interesting.

I found it via LinkedIn.

They're also looking for an associate producer and a production assistant for the blog segment.

Um, except for my complete lack of broadcast experience, you're right, K.

Bill, exp. not as important as who interviews the most well. Just let them meet you and see that your interested and the exp. issue will work itself out as long as you do a little homework and bs a little :)

Blogs and MSM combined...human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

Yeah, this sounds like a great plan, CNN.

I'd be interested too but couldn't take an on air job. I'm allergic to hair spray.

What do you want to bet that the person they select we either know (i.e. Wonkette) or is someone we don't know (non-blogger but trainable to CNN standards of political leanings). My gut says it will be someone we don't know that well but that the left knows all to well.

So they want a MSM journalist to comment on blogs?

That seems a little funny does it not.

Posted by: EU Serf at June 10, 2005 08:52 AM

It's pretty clear that they're looking for an insider who can speak bloggese.

If they were serious, they'd look for a blogger who can speak broadcast newsese.

Posted by: geekWithA.45 at June 10, 2005 09:03 AM

Hm this is odd - CNN already has a blog segment "Inside the Blogs" which airs around 450 - 500pm EST everyday. And the producer does the segment with another person. Perhaps that producer is leaving CNN, since Inside Politics is going off air .. or perhaps they may have a new show that will replace a portion of Inside Politics (since IP is 2hours long).

BTW: MSNBC is getting into blogs, they already have one show (Connected: Coast to Coast) that sometimes have bloggers on in heated discussions. But a little bird told me they are interested in filling the 11pm EST time slot with a blog show.

Posted by: Ian at June 10, 2005 09:43 AM

This is not new for CNN.

Watch Inside Politics and on most (if not all) days they do an around the blogosphere segment with two "blog reporters".

Still hope you apply for the job!

Hey, I'm a blogger who can speak broadcastese! I was carefully trained in a thirteen-week military shake-n-bake broadcaster course at the Defense Information School! Would I be qualified, do you think?

Posted by: Sgt. Mom at June 10, 2005 12:02 PM

Hmmmm. Wonder how much they pay.

Posted by: brittney at June 10, 2005 02:10 PM

Man...I wonder if they'd hire a 15 year old? I mean, I almost started a podcast and I've done my own blog roundup and on the scene report by video. Does that count?

Posted by: Agent Tim at June 10, 2005 02:25 PM

As a blogger, I think it's pretty cool that blogs are becoming disproportionately influential.

Posted by: Half Sigma at June 10, 2005 06:07 PM

I wonder is this a "If you can't beat them join them job" or a last ditch effort to beat them job?

Posted by: Doug R at June 11, 2005 07:18 AM

Who wants to bet that CNN will choose a "progressive" blogger to fill this position?

Posted by: LHM at June 11, 2005 07:33 AM

CNN = Terrorist News Network. Don't trust anyone but FOX!!! I'll trade freedom for security any day!!

I qualify! I qualify! As I approach fulltime retirement, an appropriate level of senility with creaking bones, and recognizing that CNN came to life reeking an out of date attitude towards the rest of the world, it seems I am a perfect match for their opening for a blogosphere commentator. I may be contacted as I give my unswerving, paeans to the conservative cause in any location about south Texas where I am able to draw an audience (2, or more, people).

Send out the hounds!

LHM:
Do you mean progressive as opposed to regressive?

Typical Voter:
By all means continue to get all of your news from Fox, where Sean Hannity, without blinking an eye, converts Howard Dean's "...a lot of them have never worked a day in their lives" to "...all Republicans have never worked a day in their lives".

Does this little bit of deception bother you as it does me? Fox's people like Hannity, O'Reilly, David Asman, Bridget Quinn, and others routinely do this. It's a little thing, but it's dishonest and, to me reveals a little cynical contempt for the attentiveness and discernment of their viewers.
