« What Blogs Do Journalists Read? | Main | 55 Ford » June 9, 2005A Nashville SceneI took my camera with me when I left campus for lunch today, on a hunch I might see something worth photographing. Sure enough, I was barely a block from campus, at a stop sign waiting to turn right, when this Mercedes came speeding past, with a guy standing up through the sunroof, filming. The camera - you can see the back of it there on his right shoulder if you click the picture for the larger version - looked like one of those rather large cameras that a TV news photographer uses, though I don't know if it was video or film. I caught up with them at the next traffic light, zipped down my window and asked, "What are you doing?" "We're making a movie about Nashville," he said. And then they sped off. As you can see here, the car, with a University of Southern California sticker on the back window, sports a bumper sticker that reads "Question Reality" and a license plate frame reads "On the road of Happy Destiny." It all seemed to make perfect sense. UPDATE: I wonder if they were practicing for this. Posted in Nashville

Guerrilla filmakers in action. Thought I would point out something that may lessen the significance of who these people "really are". The license plate frame contains an aphorism from the big blue book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Its meaning would not fit in with any conspiracy theories, though. Also, it is doubtful that the people driving the car were responsible for placing it there and are probably clueless to its origin and meaning. Basically the saying espouses a common philosophical theme known throughout human history; the idea is that meaning in our lives is about the process and not about the goal. "Take it one day at a time" is a similar aphorism. So is "Let go and Let God". The "Happy Destiny" part is an affirmation that when we do right in our daily lifes we find fulfillment and we need not wait to attain it. Right here, right now. Okay, so you see where this is going.
