« Questioning Corker 2 | Main | Forced Volunteerism Update » May 18, 2005Making Money With BlogsNashville City Paper has a piece on making money with blogs, based on interviews the reporter did with attendees at the recent BlogNashville conference. Best quote: "Blog for the love of it," said Todd Anderson, who, since 1999, has written and published a variety of pop-culture oriented material. "Any creative venture worth its salt is done just for the love of the work, not the monetary payoff," he said. "I love writing so much that I’m not going to wait around for someone to publish my work. I’m going to publish it whether it is a blog, a zine or a novel."I do this blog because I love doing it, and I don't expect the blog itself will ever become a major source of income (although it has lead to a number of consulting and freelance opportunities). Still, I welcome the revenue from ads and contributions from satisfied readers. By the way, Todd Anderson designed my blog when I switched from Blogger to MovableType, although he told me recently he now favors working with WordPress. Posted in BlogNashville

I imagine you WILL like WordPress a lot more when it comes time to upgrade MT and a) it costs, and b) you can't host all these free blogs and domains you've been offering to host. Posted by: skb at May 18, 2005 10:42 AMI'll be sticking with MT, thankyouverymuch. I like the fact that its future development is assured by a healthy pile of VC cash, while WordPress has no such well-funded future. You don't need to worry about me, bubba - media is what I do and what I know. Trust me, the ROI on my efforts and expenses will (indeed, already IS) paying off on the various blogs and things I've been doing with blogs. MT's prices are ultra reasonable, and make it very easy to build a profitable niche media business. My only problem right now is I don't have enough time to do every project I'd like to do. (Memo to any angel investors out there: I would love to talk to you about a business plan I have involving blogs.) Posted by: Bill Hobbs at May 18, 2005 11:20 AMThanks for the shout-out, Bill! And thanks for all your work on BlogNashville! It was a great time. Posted by: todd-a at May 18, 2005 11:35 AMI do hope to make some money off my blog, or at least use it as a promotional vehicle. Also thanks for taking the time to give the advice at the Freedom Forum. It helped as I was trying to figure out where and when to display my novel "Death of a Blogger", and the rules of that game are still unfamiliar to me. Ironically, even though I did as you suggested, and didn't display there, I had a sale anyways. And I like my Blogger, but then I'm cheap. And since I'm trying to make my site a local news portal for S Mid-TN, I added you to my blogroll. Posted by: Eric R. Ashley at May 19, 2005 10:37 PMWell, I didn't see the article - He didn't talk to me. Everything I have today, including the income to maintain it - a one bedroom apartment, a bicycle, a laptop, (soon to have cable internet) food, etc - can all be attributed to my blogging efforts. I still live very meagerly, but it can happen - a decent income can come from a blog - I guess it just depends on what you do with your blog. Posted by: Kevin at May 22, 2005 01:18 PMPost a comment
