Bredesen Poll Update

Matt White weighs in on Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen's sliding popularity:

The most damaging numbers:
  • 50% disapproval among Black voters

  • 66% disapproval among Hispanic voters

  • 43% disapproval among Democrats

  • 48% disapproval among Independants
  • In a flaming red state like Tennessee, where Bredesen won by only 50,000 votes, it is a practical impossibility to win with his base as divided as it is. Typical Democratic constituencies won't vote for a Republican no matter how disaffected they are with the candidate of their party. They will, however, stay home and Phil Bredesen can ill-afford that.

Bruce Barry also thinks Bredesen is vulnerable. I'll echo Matt's recent call that it's past time the GOP "put a horse" in the governor's race.

UPDATE: More thoughts from John Norris Brown and Adam Groves.

    Hi Bill,
Visiting liberal, here. And I assure your readers, your story about Bredesen is spot on. I don't know one liberal who will vote for him.
I posted to Jay over at B4B that you all are in a win/win situation if Corker drops out of the Senate race and runs for governor instead. You'd end up with a conservative Republican for the Senate race, and a liberal Republican for the governor's race. And frankly, that scenario scares me, because I believe that to be a winning combo for you all.
    Best,

Just goes to show that American voters, for the most part will vote for what they think is best for their families, not what is best for the politcal party.

Here in Ohio, I do not know one single Conservative, and I know quite a few, that supports our crummy GOP Governor Taft. One poll had him at 19% approval rating. If he was able to run again I vote for what ever Democrat was running against him and I am as conservastive as can be.
