« BlogNashville Scene | Main | Busy » May 5, 2005Free Franklin WiFi?The Nashville suburb of Franklin may soon become the first citywide municipal wifi hotspot in Tennessee - but Nashville remains far behind in the emerging trend of cities offering ubiqituous wireless Internet access. The Scene has the story. A few years ago, I started sending emails to a key person 's economic development efforts, often with articles attached about what other cities are doing to make wireless Internet access available in their central business districts. Nothing much happened. It's past time it did. Two or three years from now, a city that doesn't have free or low-cost wireless Internet access blanketing its public areas will be akin to a city that doesn't offer electricity service. There's free wifi everywhere. I did a survey of an office building last week and there were nine wireless networks available outside and six of those had no security. I just don't think it is government's job to provide this service. If the downtown businesses want to get together with the chamber of commerce and provide wifi that's OK but gov't should stay out of it. Had no luck in finding broadband, next step is dsl but I'm not holding my breath. Posted by: toni at May 5, 2005 01:13 PMPost a comment
