« Governor's Friend Lands Plum Contract | Main | Dictator UPDATE: WSMV's Bias is Showing » May 4, 2005State Income Tax Ban Stalls
Rep. Mae Beavers, R-Mt. Juliet, was seeking to put the issue in front of voters in 2010. Her proposed amendment to the constitution would specifically prohibit a state income tax on earned income. No, Sen Hagood. It clarifies it. The state constitution of Tennessee in fact does prohibit a state income tax - as thre different state Supreme Courts have ruled unanimously over the years - but Tennessee's current attorney general has come up with some clever legal reasoning he thinks will convince the current state Supreme Court judges - mostly liberal Democrats - to overturn those past rulings. The argument has a gaping hole, but that might not matter to the liberal Democrats on the bench. Beavers' proposed amendment would simply allow voters to add to the constitution some clearer language on the issue. Republicans ought to push the measure forward. Even if it doesn't make it through the legislative process and onto the ballot, every vote on the proposal is another chance to expose how our legislators really feel about a state income tax. The media cabal in East Tennessee (News TAlk 100, Knox News Sentinel, WBIR) can't cover for Jamie Hagood across the entire state. Please note: Hallerin Hilton Hill has commented "Jamie Hagood may be our first female governor." It's going to be tough for Hagood with Nashville bloggers keeping watch on what happens in the legislative halls. The sound bytes like "we're going to right the ship" don't sell when it comes to votes, facts, and stated positions. She's wrong on pre-k, she's afraid of Mae Beaver's clarification of an income tax, she's against the Student Bill of Rights, and just this las week, the far left publication Metro Pulse just wrote a glowing editorial praising her "leadership." She didn't get chosen by Democrat Wilder to lead a committee for being a hard-core conservative. I hope she gets back on track and stops playing these kind of games. We need strong leadership--not self promoters. Posted by: Leroy at May 4, 2005 08:31 AMI don't really know what utility such a ban is. Here in Texas the Legislature is tryimg to pass a franchise tax on virtually all business profit and payroll, making a de-facto income tax in spite of the constitutional ban.
