Action Opportunity

Ben Cunningham from Tennessee Tax Revolt emailed an urgent update regarding Gov. Phil Bredesen's Pre-K boondoggle, which I wrote about here earlier today in a post reporting on a new study by a policy think tank that finds that government-funded universal pre-k programs have little educational bang for the buck.

Ben writes:

Please call and email Senator Jamie Hagood immediately. She is a Republican from Knoxville and the Chair of the Senate Education Committee. She is reportedly leaning toward supporting Governor Bredesen's Pre-K boondoggle. Please tell her you oppose the Governor's new Pre-K program. We must act TODAY since the bill will come up in her committee tommorrow. Call tonight and leave her a voicemail if possible.

Senator Jamie Hagood office number: (615) 741-1648

Bredesen's Pre-K program. If you liked Tenncare, you will luv Pre-K.

The Senate is very close to voting on Governor Bredesen's Pre-K bill which, this year, will take $25 million out of the lottery funds. The real problem is that it will start us down the path toward a huge new education bureaucracy that will very probably grow to $300 million of taxpayer dollars each year.

Well said. If you live in Tennessee and don't want yet another wasteful and ineffective government program costing you more and more of your hard-earned money in taxes, you know what to do.

I emailed Senator Hagood yesterday.

My family listened to Miss Hagood on a Sunday talk show. She is more than leaning--she is actually pushing Bredesen's plan--talking points and all.

It is irresponsible to start an entire new program when TennCare hasn't even been reformed. Warning as well to localities with regard to property taxes, not to mention the issues so well outlined by Ms. Olsen and Mr. Johnson in their policy paper.

I sure hope Miss Hagood is not "growing" in her office as the big government advocates like to say.

As much as I would like to see more funding move to improving education in Tennessee, I have to agree with you on this one. Throwing money at a program that does not include objectives/support/training (on the front end) for the teachers who would be instrumental in making it happen is a travesty. Without better trained educators, a pre-K program is no better than state sponsored day care.

Go to this propaganda site
http://www.tennessee.gov/governor/prek/research/scientific.htm#
This site spouts the mantra of all the "scientific" studies that support pouring billions down another dark hole. Currently there are 44 states that are beginning this worthless drain of our resources. Amazingly most every state estimates $300 million a year to fully fund. Yet $50 billion later for the Federal program and nothing to show for it.

Now go hear to see how the state propaganda "scientific" studies are debunked.

Hagood ran on a conservative platform but since assuming office she sounds more like Bredesen everyday. For every conservative agenda item she always has a "but".
