Schiavo 7

Glenn Reynolds's Salon essay on the political implications of the federal intervention in the Terri Schiavo tragedy is a must-read, even if I don't necessarily agree with all of his analysis. I would agree the GOP is facing an internal debate over the role of government, and that the forces of federalism seem to be in retreat while the forces of Big Government seem to be on the advance. But the GOP has always been hobbled by that internal debate, and put forth candidates on both sides of it. The party of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan also was the party of Nelson Rockefeller. It's a healthy debate, neither side is 100 percent right, and there's room for both views under the GOP's big tent. Indeed, there has to be, otherwise the coalition is too small to win elections.

May Terri rest in peace.

Regarding Glenn Reynold's, I quote Bob Schindler, Terri's father, regarding the judiciary:

"They're showing who's in command of this country. And we're not. The public is not, and the people you elect to Congress are not. The judges are. And woe to this country..."

I don't think the crisis is federalism--instead, activism. It is my opinion, that the judiciary was intended to be the weakest branch. That the Mass. court for example, ordered that legislation be drafted and passed regarding homosexual marriage, is astonishing to me. Does that mean every "no" vote in the Mass. legislature was unconstitutional?

I'm definitely no lawyer, but I don't understand the difference between the thousands of cases by convicted felons that go before federal appeals courts via habeas corpus petitions (about 90% of prisoner petitions are filed by state prisoners), and the request by Congress for a new finding of fact for Terri.

Ted Bundy spent $6 million dollars of Florida taxpayer money and 10 years appealing his sentence. John Wayne Gacy spent 14 years appealing. Virginia murderer Michael Williams was removed from death row in 2001 thanks to a ruling by the Supreme Court that ruled his attorney was lame.

I know a 1996 law tried to limit the federal appeals, but nevertheless, they are not shut out entirely.

I have a lot of questions.

I hope my comments don't get tossed out because I disagree with Mr Hobbs opinions in the way that citizens of the US are turned away from Bush's appearances if they don't agree with his agenda. What's Christian or "love America" about that? I thought the POTUS was supposed to represent all the people?

Terry did you think that judges have too much power when they installed Bush in the White House in a Supreme Court coup? Whenever its convenient the republicans never hesitate to use the courts and that is why they want to stack them with rightwing judges.

If you wish to discuss the most outrageous breaking of the US Constitution, that happened when Congress voted to give the White House the power to start a war which right belongs to the Legislative.

The issue here Mr Hobbs is that republicans were capable of using the suffering of this family in order to pander to their holyroller base. If opinion polls had shown that PR to be sucessful they wouldn't be open minded or tolerent to those with different opinions but they would be accusing those who disagree of being anti-American and unpatriotic. Who do you think you're fooling? Rightwingers are already calling people names just as Terry is trashing judges for doing their jobs. We know Bush's record in TX and Jeb's Dept of Children's Services record in FL. And it ain't pretty.

Health care for the people takes a backseat to profits of HMOs and Insurance companies and if cost is involved they regularly pull the plug and deny people much needed health care. Am I right or am I right. How quickly some people forget.

The issue isn't partisan.

Judge Greer who ordered the killing---lives in Florida and is no Democrat--he is a southern Baptist Republican.

And regardless of the lemmings who are so easily against something because they believe the Christian right is for it, what say they about the unanimous consent in the United States Senate to pass the bill requesting a federal review for Terri?

Liberal Senator Tom Harkin--chief sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act--worked for the measure. Minority Leader Harry Reid was cooperative. Not one Democrat Senator objected.

In the House, 46 Democrats voted for the bill, 53 against.

What of the Reverend Jesse Jackson lobbying on behalf of Terri? He's no right winger.

Partisanship is usually a diversionary cry.

Principles are worthless if they fail to protect basic human rights. Although a libertarian, I would've favored "big government" solution via the President/Congress preventing Ms. Schiavo from being starved to death.

That being said, I just hope someone puts a bullet in Mike Schaivo's brain.

Ballot box, soap box, ammo box. Use in that order.

When our votes are meaningless, complaining doesn't help, time for a revolution.

Terry its not news that Democrats don't walk in lockstep like rightwing dittoheads. I don't consult the leftwing talking points before I make up my mind about something.

I'm not surprised by the few on the right who think Teri was in good shape. Most of them are brain dead too. Relatively speaking their concept of the degree of intelligence necessary to be kept alive would make Bush a genius. This should NEVER have become an issue in the first place. Bush called Congress back to DC because republicans thought this would be a compelling issue to get them votes. Bush never came back to DC when he his DPB said that bin laden was going to hijack a plane and fly it into a skyscraper. That says everything about the morals and values of the right!

Rightwingers are never consistant either. They always follow like sheep which has made the over use of the word "lemmings" practically unbearable. Vigorious debate is something I enjoy and debating is American. Acting like you are Saddam and demanding that people walk in lockstep is unAmerican and insufferable since people have to be darned arrogant to think they are the only ones entitled to an opinion. Anyone who is a lemming would be the one to follow without question. You only fear debate when you know you can't make your case.

Republicans used to chant "tax and spend liberals" but now they support spending us into bankruptcy and have given us a historic debt. They screamed "he lied" "he lied" when Clinton lied about his affair but now they seem oblivious to the lies about WMD, the stolen election and the fixed Diebold voting machines and shenanigans in Ohio and FL which I'm quite certain Jesus would not approve of.

If you are guilty of breaking the least of my Commandments you are guilty of breaking them all. That's what Jesus said. If you steal elections and "shock" and "awe" people who Jesus died for by dropping tens of thousands of pounds of bombs on them then I don't think Jesus is impressed if you play politics with the life of a braindead woman. I know I'm not. The rightwing cult of Christianity has opened the door for liberals out of the northeast and CA to attack Jesus and Christians and it has done nothing to lift Jesus up and it has nothing to do with Him or His teachings. You can't pick and choose when or if you will obey Jesus. You can't condemn Clinton for lying and then overlook the lies of Bush. You can't pull the plug on a 6 month old child in Texas because its costing an HMO, when his Mother pleaded for his life and then pretend to care about Terri. Only a lemming would be gullible enough to fall for that bs.

Terri was too braindead to be consulted about what she wanted. She was in that condition for 15 years. She never got better. Terri's father pulled the plug on his own Mother after ONE WEEK.

Republicans take advantage of situations to blanket the airwaves with platitudes and sound bites. Its takes time and effort to give a through coverage of any issue and it takes time to understand issues. Only low IQ lemmings would respond to mindless platitudes and the most shallow understanding of complex issues. The republicans certainly know their base. They know they can always count on them to follow like lemmings no matter how lowbrow the daily talking points are. It is extraordinarily telling when there is no consistancy but rightwingers are blissfully unaware.
