Conyers Gets It Right

I rarely agree with U.S. Rep. John Conyers, but the Michigan Democrat has put his name on a very good op-ed about whether bloggers ought to be granted the same First Amendment-related legal protections as journalists. Conyers:

Bloggers should be classified as journalists and given First Amendment protections based on the function they perform, not the form of their transmissions. Properly understood, the First Amendment applies to all those who report with journalistic integrity - offline or online. ... We need to protect bloggers' First Amendment rights so they can help us protect our own citizens' rights.
A pretty good piece, though Conyers is a bit too narrow: We need to protect First Amendment rights for all citizens, whether they write for the New York Times, are a member of Congress, publish a little blog, or just happen to be an American.
