« The Energy Crisis | Main | Ford Probe » March 24, 2005Schiavo 4Jonathan Witt has some thoughts about Terri Schiavo and what it is really like to die of thirst. Let's set aside the hunger issue, since that's not what's going to kill Terri Schiavo. If someone doesn't find a way to cut through the sanctimonious red tape and get water to her, she'll die of thirst. Why the graphic description? An LA Times story purports to reveal how positively enjoyable it is to die of hunger and thirst.Witt's piece is rather graphic, but as the country debates the fate of a brain-damaged women whose own wishes we can not know with certainty, it's important to know the truth about how she will die. You just have to get through reading it - Terri Schiavo has to go through it for real. Posted in Social Issues

If we are being honest here, do not not first have to determine whether Terri Schiavo has any self-consciousness. The whole case rests on her condition. If we assume the courts got it right (which is a big assumption), then the description of awareness of experience is not relevant. Or am I wrong here? Admittedly, if she does have some level of higher brain function then you have a HUGE point. It is grusome!! But does the neurological evidence support this?? I am honestly asking that question. My desire is that we are being honest and not sentimental or sensational in light of the science. She might appear to have awareness but actually not.
