« Thank You | Main | "Ah, the modern liberal mind on display." » March 21, 2005"This is Journalism."Patrick Beeson, a graduate student of journalism at the University of Alabama, has an excellent article on the relationship between blogging and journalism, on the website of Quill, the magazine for members of the Society of Professional Journalists. Best quote in the piece: "This is journalism. Raw, unedited, but still journalism," said Jonathan Dube, MSNBC.com managing producer and publisher of Cyberjournalist.net.The question "Is blogging journalism?" is actually a very stupid question. Some is, some isn't. At its core, journalism is just two things: gathering information and disseminating it to the public. If a blogger does those two things, he or she is doing journalism. And because the term "journalism" incudes opinion journalism - fact-based commentary, editorials and anaylsis pieces - bloggers who produce such pieces are, by definition, doing journalism. This is journalism on a blog. This is not. Beeson's master's project focuses on weblogs, blogging ethics and the use of weblogs in college journalism programs. You should read his whole article. You should also make plans to attend part or all of the BlogNashville conference May 5-7 . Posted in Blogging & Journalism

Thanks for the kind comments on the Quill piece. This is the first of a three-part series on blogging for Quill, the next of which should be published in April. That piece will deal with blogging ethics. A final piece on blogging and college journalism programs is set to be published in August.
