An Axe To Grind

Lance Frizzell, who is currently serving with the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment in northern Iraq, hilariously fisks a hatchet job on the 278th written by David Axe, a writer for the hard-Left Village Voice who dropped in to northern Iraq for a few days, looked around, and wrote the factually disabled, condescending and anti-American piece he'd intended to write all along. Frizzell's piece is too good to excerpt - just go read the whole thing.

Frizzell to Axe: "Cheer up Dave, your team still has Cuba, China and North Korea!"

uhh...what? I couldn't imagine a more incoherent "fisk." The VVoice author notes the region's lack of major industry and Lance says its because he only recognizes communist industry? Eesh. Shoddy thinking, worse writing.

Yes. All I got was "rah rah GI Joe good. Rah rah commie bad. Rah rah rah rah." Has the 278th received a time-travel assignment to re-engage in the Cold War? I thought they were in Iraq.

That was the one weak part in an otherwise very strong fisk. The VV piece was condescending in the extreme to the people of Northern Iraq and to the 278th.

I went to this article fulling expecting to find a left-leaning ant-war report. Didn't find it. What i think I found was a guy (Frizzell) that was more concerned with the fact that the article came from the Village Voice.

Perhaps Mr. Frizzell should take into account his own bias - he clearly misrepresents everything Dave Axe had to say.

Okay, how 'bout if Lance pointed out the irony in Axe's statement.

Guys like Axe routinely disparage industrial, commercial, and capalist ventures as blights on the environment, exploitive of poor workers, yada yada yada. Now Axe seems to be mocking the LACK of such ventures! Are hard core lefties ever happy?

And he's right...Axe could have written that on the plane ride over. He had his story in mind, and nothing he saw in Iraq was going to change the angle. I'm sure the VV could have reached into it's grab bag of writers--white, privileged, college-educated, ridden with guilt over being white college educated privileged types--and gotten the same story.

I think Comrade joe - or should I say Alger? - is engaged in a little strategic misdirection. Exhibit A, from this very website:

I'm the author of the 278th piece in Village Voice. Guess what? I voted Libertarian in 2004, Republican in 2000 and 1996. I paid my own way to Iraq, went into debt doing so, and am struggling to make back that money. Why did I go? Because I wanted to learn the truth about our efforts in Iraq instead of getting it second-hand, like many bloggers do. As for being priveleged? Does getting bombed, shot at and mortared count as privelege? And yeah, I'm white -- but what does that have to do with anything?
