The Old College Try

State Sen. Tim Burchett, R?-Knoxville, has filed legislation that, if passed, would require persons running for the position of "county mayor" in Tennessee to have a college degree. Very few counties in Tennessee have "mayors." Most have "county executives." But Shelby County, which includes the city of Memphis, calls its county exec the "county mayor." So does Knox County, which includes the city of Knoxville. Residents of Knoxville and Memphis each have two mayors. The bill has a sponsor in the state House as well - state Rep. Mike McDonald, D-Portland. [Hat tip: Michael Silence]

Has Burchett explained whey he feels this is a necessary requirement while other elected officials such as legislators are not required to have degrees? This seems elitist and makes you want to closely check out Tim's financial disclosure from the last election.
Over 50% of the successful millionaires and business owners in this country never went to college yet some are running businesses with budgets and employees far greater than Knox county.
After the latest Mexican standoff over the wheel tax, the requirement should be changed to a BS from Ringling Bros. Clown University.

Actually, Bill, there was legislation passed a few years ago which changed the designation of all "county executives" to "county mayors." As such, there are no "county executives" in Tennessee. I know this because my uncle is one of them, and it seemed somewhat meaningless of a change. My uncle does not have a college degree, but I couldn't imagine anyone I'd trust more with my tax dollars.
