Wheel Tax Greaser Update 2

The Tennessee state Senate's State and Local Government Committee today (in fact, right now this morning as I compose this blog entry) will take up Senate Bill 698, legislation that would make it easier for county commissions across Tennessee to raise wheel taxes while also stripping the citizenry of the right they currently have to cancel such tax increases via a successful petition drive and referendum.

While state Sens. Bill Ketron and Ron Ramsey and state Reps. Jerome Cochran and David Davis have withdrawn their earlier and misguided support for the wheel tax bill, the legislation is not dead.

State Sen. Douglas Henry and state Reps. John Hood, Les Winningham, Sherry Jones, and David Hawk are still sponsoring this legislation, which, according to Ben Cunningham at Tennessee Tax Revolt is being pushed the Tennessee Association of County Mayors and their lobbyist Fred Congdon.

See also this entry on the wheel tax bill.

Incidentally, the mainstream media has, so far, ignored this story, even though in the past year citizens in several counties have used the petition and referendum process to overturn wheel-tax increases. Memo to the media: Your readers would be interested to know about legislation that seeks to make it much, much easier for county commissions to raise taxes, and impossible for citizens to stop them.

OK, I have to ask since I do not live in Tennessee: what exactly is "the wheel tax?"

Car tag taxes. Sorry. I've lived here so long I forgot that people don't call them "wheel taxes" everywhere.

Stopping the wheel tax in Hardin County was not simply a vote to not pay any more taxes as much as it was a vote against a half baked idea and plans for for a facility that does not meet our current, let alone future, detention center (Jail) needs.

You know Bill what's truly amazing is the fact that Cochran ADMITTED he had not written nor read the legislation he introduced!
And now the citizens of this state will probably be forced to pay for this in perpetuity.
This is gross negligence bar none. "No Child Left Behind" should be amended to "No Child OR Legislator Left Behind" so they may learn to read.
