More For Less

I bought my Canon EOS Digital Rebel camera too soon. Canon has come out with the new Digital Rebel XT, an 8-megapixel thing of newly-improved technological beauty at a very reasonable price, and cut the price of the Digital Rebel. But, then, any time you buy digital technology, you are only a few months away from a price cut, and the release of a new-and-improved version. I once paid $2,400 for a laptop that had a 4.1GHz hard drive and a 366MHz chip. Today, you can't get one of those at any price - but you can get a laptop with a 60-gig hard drive and a 1.6-gig chip for about half that price. Best advice: Once you buy an expensive new new digital tool or toy, avoid electronics sale circulars and stores and such until you come up with a rationale for why you need two are planning to purchase again.

I think you just spent my tax return.

You are so right, Bill. In 1984, I purchased one of the first Macs, which had a fraction of the computing power my cell phone today has -- and, considering inflation, it cost me many times the price of what a top-of-the-line Mac costs today. Never look back.

In 1987 I bought an 8086 pc with 640K of ram and a 20Meg hard drive, monochrome monitor for about $1700.

Bill, I know it was a typo, but I can't resist: tell me more about that 4.1 GHz hard drive...how much could it store? Sure seems fast, I mean your average 7200 RPM drive only runs at 120 Hz, or a ratio of about 1 RPM to 34 million RPM. ;)
