« This Space NOT For Sale | Main | Looking For East Tennessee Bloggers » January 13, 2005Canon vs. NikonSouth Knox Bubba has a very detailed post comparing the Nikon D70 and the Canon 20D digital cameras. But he chose an apples to oranges comparison. The Nikon D70 is a 6.1-megapixel camera. The Canon 20D is an 8.2-megapixel camera. Unless you're shooting professionally or taking pictures you plan to have printed the size of billboards, you don't need an 8.2-megapixel camera. I considered the Nikon D70 before opting to purchase the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, which has two advantages over the D70: It is 6.3 megapixels, not 6.1. And it costs significantly less. The Digital Rebel would have been a better apples-to-apples comparison with the 6.1-megapixel D70 than the 8.1-megapixel Canon 20D. Still, Bubba's post is well worth reading if you're in the market for a new digital SLR. If you opt to buy the Digital Rebel, do yourself a favor and instead of buying it with the standard 18-55mm lens, instead buy just the camera body and get Canon's 28-135mm zoom instead. And here's a special offer for all HobbsOnline readers: Buy one of the cameras listed above - or any other item costing $499 or above - via an Amazon affiliate link from HobbsOnline and when Amazon sends me my quarterly commission check, I'll mail or PayPal you half of the commission on your purchase. I haven't heard much talk about Minolta's digital SLR (the Konica Milolta 7D... http://www.dpreview.com/news/0409/04091504km7d.asp). Being a current Minolta 35mm user (with all the lenses and accessories associated with it that would also work on the digital), I wonder if it's a direction I should head. The 7D is only 6.1MP, but that's plenty for me. It looks like a good camera...just no one is talking about it much...at least I haven't found much. BTW...when I finally decide to bite the bullet and go digital, I'll take you up on your Amazon offer there. That is if I decide to buy new. Posted by: Blake at January 13, 2005 10:46 AMActually, it's more of a lens system comparison than a camera body comparison. Under $5000 there isn't really a lot of differnce in DSLR bodies. Posted by: skb at January 13, 2005 11:26 AMYou might as well try comparing Jesus to Mohammed. Canon vs. Nikon is much as a religious debate as Mac vs. PC. I do professional photography and own a Nikon D2H which, at the time, was $3200 just for the body and "only" 4.1 MP. I say "only" because 16x20 prints from 4.1 are crystal clear. You can upsize qute a bit as well and I've seen 30" prints that look phenomenal. The only thing higher MPs help with is editing in Photoshop. Even then, as you start gettig up in size, it gets to a point of being a little ridiculous. With all the touching up I have to do for thousands of shots, the size really does matter. But if you're not printing above 16x20's (which most people don't), sometimes the higher resolution can be more of a hinderence than it's worth. Oh, also, billboards are actually VERY low resolution. They're just so far away it looks clear. If you actually stood next to one you'd see the dots that comprise the image are about the size of a half-dollar. Posted by: Sharp as a Marble at January 13, 2005 12:58 PMActually, I mean if a person was going to print a digital photo the size of a billboard, not necessarily for use as an actual billboard! Posted by: Bill at January 13, 2005 01:54 PMI like my Brownie Hawkeye, it takes better pictures than a Nikon. Posted by: Eduardo at January 14, 2005 06:20 PMPost a comment
