"The Next Great Battle Between Socialism and Capitalism"

Foreign Policy magazine says: "The next great battle between socialism and capitalism will be waged over human health and life expectancy. As rich countries grow richer, and as healthcare technology continues to improve, people will spend ever growing shares of their income on living longer and healthier lives."

Should good health be a luxury?

Is is moral for a society to allow healthcare for its citizens to be market-driven?

Is it moral for those who provide healthcare to become enormously wealthy?

Why is there never any news about Canadians dropping dead in the streets? Besides, don't we have similar rationing of, say, bypass operations by accountants at our insurance companies? What's the difference?

Because the Canadians drop dead in the ambulance while it circles the city looking for a hospital that isn't jammed.

People who think healthcare shouldn't be market driven are the same people who still haven't learned the basic principal of "no free lunch."

By necessity, there is a limit to how much can be spent on healthcare, unless we plan to do without food, housing, and clothing. Somehow I expect that doing without those things would increase healthcare even more.

Even in socialized countries, there is a decision made on how much to spend on healthcare. The only difference is that in those countries, some paper-pushing official decides for you. In the U.S. an insurance official may limit your care, but if you don't like it you can always look for another company or even pay yourself. In other words, you have some FREEDOM.
