Big Numbers for Lance's New Blog

Lance Frizzell's blog from northern Iraq, imaginatively titled Lance In Iraq, had a whopping 17,703 unique visitors in December. That's approximately the same number of readers my blog had in January 2004 - after two years of blogging. And, uh, Lance didn't start posting until mid-December. Not bad for a first-month blogger! Thanks also to Instapundit Glenn Reynolds, who linked to Lance's blog early on, and to Knoxville News-Sentinel reporter Michael Silence, who followed up with a great story about the blog. And thanks also to the unknown Associated Press editor who decided to put the KNS story on the wire - it got picked up in countless papers. Also thanks to the several teevee stations and Knoxville that mentioned Lance's blog, and to the many blogs that linked to it.

Don't miss Lance's latest post.

It's too bad his superiors put the kill on his comments feature. This guy is a professional, and should be well able to take care of himself and the military's interests.

I fail to see the logic in their action. Do they somehow limit the ability of soldiers to read and react to similar material on other sites?

A point that deserves an answer. Folks were putting too much personal info in the comments as far as where loved ones were located, their jobs, etc. While I could remove it if I was online, some pretty detailed stuff was staying up for hours at a time.

A second worry was some sick-type using the info to call in a fake kidnapping.

I'll be quoting dissenting views for discussion as much as possible. The link above is the 1st example of that.

Duly noted.

I can see where that might cause problems. In fact, I know two people who are serving there right now, but I purposely avoided mentioning them for the same reason you cite. I felt some discomfort with the idea of others' openness.

I thought it might have been me, since I don't recall seeing any other comments that were critical of Mr. Bush and his cohorts as mine were. My moment of self-importance has vanished.

I do maintain my position that the Bush administration started something that you guys will have to finish, so good luck, be careful, and try to help bring this situation to a conclusion that refelects well on us and benefits all mankind.
