Memogate: A Kerry Campaign Connection?

Bill Burkett, described as the source of the forged memos upon which CBS News broadcast a smear-job on President Bush, now reportedly says he passed the info to former Sen. Max Cleland. Cleland, as you may recall, is a big-shot in the Kerry campaign. If the forged memos went from Burkett to the Kerry campaign via Cleland and then to CBS - Cleland tried to toss a grenade into the enemy's camp and blew his own friends up instead.

You mean, at the same time Cleland was in Texas on 25 Aug, 04 to "demand an apology" from W for the Swiftboat ads...?

What's up with Cleland dropping grenades on himself? You'd think he'd have learnt the first time around.

Tony Coehlo, Democratic strategist with the Kerry campaign, said at the end of Hardball with Chris Matthews that the DNC had these documents before the 60 Minutes II story ran.

Need a site? Go here. The transcripts won't be available for a while.

This would give the DNC cover. And CBS. But I don't trust this given the Operation Fortunate Son ads that debuted the very next day.

This is the second time Clelland has managed to blow himself up with a grenade. All I have to say is Dumb Blather helped Bush get elected.

UPDATE: old joe lockhart ALSO had one of those 3-4 min conversations with burkett at mary mapes request!

Kerry Aide Talked to Retired Guard Officer

Joe Lockhart denied any connection between the presidential campaign and the papers. Lockhart, the second Kerry ally to confirm contact with retired Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett, said he made the call at the suggestion of CBS producer Mary Mapes.

Lockhart said Mapes asked him the weekend before the story broke to call Burkett. "She basically said there's a guy who is being helpful on the story who wants to talk to you," Lockhart said, adding that it was common knowledge that CBS was working on a story raising questions about Bush's Guard service. Mapes told him there were some records "that might move the story forward. She didn't tell me what they said."

Another question raised by Dan Rather's statement on tonight's news. Rather said that Burkett didn't come to him, but that CBS went to Burkett for the documents. How did CBS know that Burkett had the documents. This puts further weight that the Kerry campaign or the DNC was involved. Who else would have tipped off CBS that Burkett had some potentially damaging documents?

Dan Rather makes another blunder. In last night's broadcast he described Burkett as a former member of the Texas AIR National Guard. In fact, Burkett was in the Texas ARMY National Guard. Was Dan trying to obscure the fact the Burkett could have no personal knowledge of President Bush's service or was it just another example of Dan's sloppy journalism?

They knew about these memos BEFORE THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION... there's no other reason for tilting the convention toward Vietnam in the way that they did otherwise; except in hopes of contrasting it to information they knew was about to surface about Bush's National Guard duty.
