« Memogate: Did Burkett Tip His Hand? | Main | Memogate: Update » September 16, 2004Memogate: Secretary Changes Her Story, Helps CBSMarian Carr Knox, the 86-year-old retired former secretary to Lt. Jerry Killian, who was Lt. George W. Bush's commanding officer in the Texas Air National Guard, has changed her story to suit the new CBS News spin that, as the NYT puts it, the memos are fake, but true. The Houston Chronicle, Sept. 14: Last week, Knox said she had no firsthand knowledge of Bush's time with the Texas Air National Guard...60 Minutes, Sept. 15: Knox remembers Lt. Bush well, and saw him often as he showed up for weekend training in 1971 and 1972.CBS didn't mention this, but Knox is on the record as a Democratic partisan who opposes the re-election of President Bush. She appears to have given CBS a way to pivot away from the forged memos by asserting, now, what she denied to the Houston Post less than a week ago. Her convenient change-of-story allows CBS to claim that the forged memos are, nonetheless, "accurate." She provides no hard evidence for her claim that the forged memos accurately reflect Killian's thinking and Killian, who died 20 years ago, can't be asked to confirm or refute the assertion. But an actual Killian memo of known authenticity contradict the contention by CBS and Ms. Knox that the forged memos "accurately" reflect Killian's thinking. Instead of believing the known words of Lt. Col. Killian, CBS wants you to accept the content of forged memos based solely on the word of Ms. Knox. Sorry. That's not good enough. Ms Knox either was lying to the Houston Post a few days ago or she's lying to us now via CBS. Posted in Journalism & Media

Bill, I believe you mean to reference the Houston Chronicle and not the Houston Post, being the fact the Post went out of business a few years ago. Posted by: Kevin at September 17, 2004 03:07 AMPost a comment
