« Memogate: 60 Minutes Tries to Save Dan | Main | Memogate: Did Burkett Tip His Hand? » September 16, 2004Memogate: WHADDABOUT THE TYPEWRITER?!?!?!Having read the transcript and watched the video of last night's 60 Minutes segment on the forged memos, I am shocked at just how bad a journalist Dan Rather is. Dan Rather doesn't want to know the truth about the memos. He brought Marion Carr Knox, the former secretary of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian (President Bush's commanding officer in the Texas Air National Guard), onto the show not to find the truth but to prop up CBS's claim that the memos "accurately reflect" Killian's thinking at the time. Having learned that documents can be challenged, CBS has decided to base its story on the word of a secretary about the thinking of a dead man who can't be interviewed. And, Dan, what about the typewriter? Why didn't you ask Knox what kind of typewriter the TANG office had back in 1972. Why didn't you plop an IBM Selectric Composer down in front of her and ask her: "Did you have a typewriter like this? Did Lt. Col. Killian have access to a typewriter like this?" The problem is, that aside from the forged documents, there is no evidence that Bush failed to fulfill his National Guard commitment to the satisfaction of his commanding officer, his superior officers and, indeed, of the U.S. military itself. She already answered the question on the typewriters she used (from PowerLine who is quoting the Dallas Morning News): “These are not real,” she told The Dallas Morning News after examining copies of the disputed memos for the first time. “They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.” She said the typeface on the documents did not match either of the two typewriters that she used during her time at the Guard. She identified those machines as a mechanical Olympia, which was replaced by an IBM Selectric in the early 1970s. My favorite quotes come from the Houston Chronicle, though: In the Houston Chronicle, 'Knox said she had no firsthand knowledge of Bush's time with the Texas Air National Guard... ' It only took her one day to change her story to "we did discuss Bush's conduct." Wow... Posted by: Swen Ocha at September 16, 2004 09:12 AMLinks! Gimme links! That's yet abnother fine example of how CBS is molding the story to fit its anti-Bush agenda - and how it has convinced Ms. Knox to play along. Posted by: Bill at September 16, 2004 09:18 AMThe first story that I saw mentioning her had her saying from the start that they had discussed Bush's performance and that she had typed up similar memos. I don't have the timeframe, though, so who knows. It still won't bring Dan's memos back from the dead... Posted by: Michael Chaney at September 16, 2004 10:05 AMSorry about not providing the links. Bad posting etiquette on my part. Seems you found them OK, since I see the other posting now. Keep up the good work... Posted by: Swen Ocha at September 16, 2004 10:51 AMPost a comment
