Memogate: 60 Minutes Tries to Save Dan

Here's the link to the CBS Evening News story last night on memogate. And here is the transcript and free-video link from the longer story that aired later last night on 60 Minutes, which was pre-empted in some markets by local affiliates airing a movie.

in the 60 Minutes piece, Dan Rather interviews Lt. Col. Jerry Killian's former secretary, 86-year-old Marion Carr Knox, who tells Dan exactly what he wants to hear: the content of the memos reflects Killian's thinking at the time regarding Lt. Bush, but the memos are fake.

CBS uses this to pivot away from claiming the documents are authentic to claiming they may be "recreations." CBS also fails to disclose Knox's partisan leanings - she is a Democrat who very much dislikes President Bush.

And, it's worth noting, if the documents are forgeries, CBS has no concrete proof of its allegations, and the only people in its story who assert that the memo's content is accurate are known partisan Democrats and Bush-haters.

Yawn...this is getting boring. Rather is about as likely to admit wrongdoing as President Bush is likely to admit that 9/11 happened on his watch.

Let's move on.

Bill, Bill, Bill, you just don't get it. You seem to think that the authenticity of the memos is the issue here. Not at all. The only issue that matters is that Bush must go.

Really, it makes you wonder why CBS even bothered with the memos when the accusations alone are sufficient.

"Let's move on" is what people say when they are losing.

If "accurate but fake" is an acceptable standard at DNCBS, I wonder if they'd be willing to accept some "accurate but fake" currency printed at home? After all, it isn't the authencity that counts, just the accuracy, right? We could probably find some "accurate but fake" artwork to sell them, too.

Reverend,

You are right that Bush must go. He is the figurehead for the greatest domestic threat to our nation since its inception.

The relatively small number of voters who will tip the balance one way or the other may not comprehend how critical their choice will be, and how difficult it will be to correct an unwise one.
