« Forgery Update 3 | Main | Forgery Fallout » September 10, 2004Who Was The Forger?Perhaps we'll never know who forged the documents that Dan Rather and CBS used to smear President Bush, but I'll bet money former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes is somehow involved. Rather's story based on the forged documents was timed to appear at about the same time as his interview with Barnes in which Barnes lies and says he pulled strings to get into the Texas Air National Guard. We know Barnes is lying because Bush didn't need strings to be pulled - there were open slots for people willing to spend two years in full-time training to be pilots. The waiting lists were for the part-time positions. Also, Barnes lacks credibility given his extreme partisanship - he's a big-time fundraiser for and donor to Democratic candidates including John Kerry - and given his scandal-plagued past. Barnes is, to put it simply, a wealthy, corrupt ex-politician. He's also a close friend of John Kerry's and a fundraiser and friend of Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle. He is also a Texan of about the same age as Dan Rather, another Texan, and while I haven't yet found evidence I'd bet the ranch that Rather and Barnes have known each other for years. Any of my Texas readers able to help out here? UPDATE: Well, that didn't take long. Readers posted comments reminding us of the long-standing connections between Barnes and Rather, a Texas politico and a Texas journalist who have long run in the same circles - circles that include Rather attending a Democratic fundraiser with Barnes in 2000. Dan Rather and Barnes have known each other for years. Rather's daughter did a Democratic fund raiser in Texas years ago. Her Dad and Barnes were both there. Rather's daughter knows and deals with Barnes quite frequently down in Texas. Chris I'm sure they both knew each other from Texas. A native Texan, Rather spent the first ten years of his career as a journalist in Texas (1953-63). It was one of those fundraisers that Dan Rather attended in 2000, later claiming he didn't know it was a fundraiser. Sure would be fun if someone could find a pic of Barnes and Rather together at that event! On March 21, 2001, an assortment of Austin's well-to-do Democrats paid as much as $1,000 to attend a party held in the backyard of Austin City Council member Will Wynn. Rather raised $20,000 for the Texas Democratic party at the event to which he was invited by his daughter, activist Robin Rather. So, 2001 and not 2000 as my previous comment said.
