« Worth Another Look: Kerry's 1985 Trip to Managua | Main | Put It On Your Daily Reading List » September 9, 2004Where Is The Outrage?Brandishing a shotgun during a campaign rally yesterday, John Kerry made a joke about shooting President Bush during a rally yesterday, if this AP report is to be believed. In West Virginia, Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, gave [John] Kerry a rifle as a gift. Kerry, a self-described gun-owner and hunter, quipped: "I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it to the debate with me."Yet there's no outrage from the media, which apparently thinks jokes about shooting the president are not beyond the pale of reasonable discourse. In today's supercharged partisan atmosphere, with Kerry's allies calling Bush "hitler" and accusing him of all sorts of vile crimes, that's dangerous. Posted in Campaign Season

It's worth noting, perhaps that the gun was one that kerry's bill would have outlawed... I think you're stretching it a bit to say that he was threatening to shoot Bush with it. Hell, Zell Miller said he wished he could duel with Mathews. Actually, it is kind of funny. Much like Kerry's statement about Bush's training wheels. There's plenty of other things to ding Kerry on, this isn't something worth any effort (IMHO, of course) Posted by: Sharp as a Marble at September 9, 2004 03:07 PMI agree it's a funny shot, and I'm solidly in the Bush camp. We could use more jokes like this in the current atmosphere. HOWEVER, what burns my a** about this is the selective outrage of the left and it's media mouthpieces. I think we all know had GW said something like this, it would be spun as evidence of GW's warlike and violent nature. The DNC would still be howling about it days later, demanding all sorts of apologies and decrying the inappropriateness of "threats" in the campaign. Posted by: Ivan at September 9, 2004 03:41 PM"It is kind of funny"!? Do you really think so? It was such a lame quip. Kerry's off-the-cuff remarks are rarely funny, and most of the time (unlike the President's) they aren't even interesting. On the other hand, Kerry's overly-rehearsed speeches sometimes hit hilariously false notes. Kerry has such a tin ear for the way words sound that he recently tried to build a sound bite around the phrase: "W is for wrong." Rising to his theme he immortalised these words (I paraphrase without apology): "George W Bush is wong about Iraq, wong about the economy, and wong about me being in Cambodia." It is ironic to me that you think this is horrific, yet in the post right above it, you advocate a Web site called CrushKerry.com. That's not compassionate conservatism, is it? It's not an outrage because it's a joke. Jokes are not meant to be taken seriously. Which is why neither you nor Bush are taken seriously by this reader.
