It isn't just his political record, though as a very good governor of Georgia he reduced taxes. It isn't just the fact that he favors a Jacksonian response to terrorism, or that he has endorsed President Bush. His ancestry is Scots-Irish. As Michael Barone relates in his excellent commentary today on Zell's speech, Zell - like Andrew Jackson - is descended from the same people I am descended from. David Hackett Fischer in his book of history Albion's Seed, describes the diaspora of the Scots Irish from the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland and Ulster in Northern Ireland: these were fighters, proud men and proud women, lusty and loyal, fond of song (think country music) and ever ready to fight to defend their honor. Andrew Jackson was one such. Zell Miller - or Andrew Jackson in his image - is another. You do not want him to think you are a threat to his family.Last night as Zell delivered his thunderous indictment of John Kerry's Senate record, my son Bennett Alexander Hobbs, who turns two on Saturday, sat on my bed with me, leaned back against me and clapped for Zell when the audience in the convention hall clapped. My wife tells me he watched Zell on Meet the Press the other day, mesmerized. Perhaps he sees a kindred spirit, too. Zell may be the last Jacksonian Democrat. But he is not the last Jacksonian. Whenever someone refers to my ancestors as scotch irish it is like nails on a chalk board. It is like listening to Molly Ivins read the phone directory. Yes that appalacian Jacksonian approach to foreign policy is just what we need now. There are bad guys. The bad guys want to kill us. We have to find the bads. Then we have to kill the bad guys.
