I think you may be barking up the wrong tree here. I don't doubt that you can establish points of contact between John Kerry's organization and groups like MoveOn. However, I'm not sure that this information will embarrass John Kerry to the degree that President Bush's connection with the Swift Boat Vets has embarrassed the GOP.

See – I think that Bush has been wounded by his connection the Swift Boat Vets not because they are a 527, but because they have seemingly been spreading lies about a decorated American veteran. To compound this, it appears that Bush’s organization participated in similar activities in its campaign against John McCain in 2000. Add to this the perceived smears used against Max Cleland in 2002, and you have an established pattern of abusive campaign tactics against veterans.

I know that you do not believe that the President is guilty of this – but he has been tied to it twice now. It does not look good.

No one except right wing ideologues looking to excuse the GOP for secretly working with the Swift Boat Vets will care about whether Kerry’s people are coordinating with MoveOn.

However, regular people DO care about whether Bush’s friends have participated in a campaign of lies and distortion to gain political advantage against two (or three) American veterans. Establishing that Karl Rove or President Bush or prominent members of Bush’s group have been working with the Swift Boat Vets would be like proving that John Kerry worked with Michael Moore to produce F9/11. In other words, Bush has been connected with the politics of crackpots, lies and dirty tricks (again).

While Kerry has been damaged a little by the Swift Boat Vets, I think that he has successfully turned a lot of the heat back on Bush – notice that most of the stories in the media over the last few days have been about Bush aids resigning and the president trying to cool things off by saying that John Kerry should be proud of his war record.

If I were you guys I would be thinking about how shut this whole discussion down before the convention. You need stay focused on the issues and resist the urge to get into the lame character politics that has served the GOP so well for the past twenty years.

I don't think I agree with that comment but I do think the resignations are a HUGE mistake.

The attempt was to remove any semblance of impropriety. The effect, though, was to offer the dogs raw meat in that it will be perceived, exaggerated and lauded by the media megaphone as a Bush administration admission of guilt.

There will be no news about Kerry associates and 527’s; but there will be a tidal wave of news about Bush associates resigning in the wake of the revelation of various associations to the Swiftboat Vets thus discrediting their message.

As usual, what will be lost in the flurry of obfuscation will be the simple facts that are so damning to Kerry.
