USA! USA!

I must admit I'm rooting for the USA's Olympic basketball team - which Donald Sensing notes has made history by losing twice in one Olympiad - to lose again and again, so that they don't win a medal. C'mon, admit it. The thought of Allen Iverson having a gold medal, or even a silver or a bronze, makes you want to wretch, too.

Why does everyone say this? Is it because of his cornrows? His tattoos? The fact he doesn't like practice?

While other NBA stars like Shaq and Kobe, Ray Allen and Jason Kidd came up with lots of excuses, Allen Iverson and Tim Duncan kept to the committment they made a year ago to play for the USA.

They're not getting paid for this. Allen Iverson broke his thumb between games 1 and 2, but still helped carry them to victory in that second game.

Why do people hate him so much? I guess if he were clean cut... and perhaps white... more people would root for him. Yeah, this is me, right wing wacko playing the race card...

I just hate people acting like Allen Iverson is the anti-Christ.

He's a thug, he plays like a thug. He acts like a thug. I'm an ex-Philadelphian and I don't like my city being represented by a thug.

I stopped being a Sixers fan when they traded Barkley, who had his faults but was not a thug.

I'm with CJ, AI may lack social skills, and although he would be a ways down my list of people to build a team around, he did show up and he does play hard.

It's hard not to like Charles, he has a playful sense of humor and can laugh at himself. But really Bill. "Barkley, who had his faults but was not a thug." I always thought of him as a charming thug, at least in the way he played.

Yeah, Barkley may have thrown a guy through a bar window, but he's no thug. Thugs have cornrows, right?

I don't get it, either. Unlike most of the NBA stars, these guys chose to represent the U.S. when the easy thing to do was back out. I respect them for that...

I'm with Bill. I'm of the old school when olympic athletes were amatures. Besides, I find it repulsive to think that these prima-dona showboat artists with their in-your-face gift-from-god attitudes are in the world spotlight representing ME as though that in any way represents my lifestyle. Their antics are NOT mainstream America as I know and love it!

I'd like them to win (overall), but I liked it a whole lot better when we brought "teams" to the olympics. Even the original Dream team (which was professionals, too) came as one to play as one to win as one: Americans! This year, again, we simply brought a bunch of individuals. I truly want the U.S. Team to win, but could care less about the individual players.

I support the mission, just not some of the troops...

Disagree with Bill. AI, despite all his faults, has been about the only reason to watch the Sixers the past few seasons. He's one player that never seems to take a night off when so many others do.

Agree with most of the other comments here about other stars finding excuses not to play. I wouldn't lump Kobe into that group though since he's got some issues in Colorado yet to resolve. I don't think the judge would have been too receptive to excusing him from weeks of procedural hearings and jury selection so that he could play in Athens.
