Hah!

Blogger Warren Smith emails:

Now that we know John Kerry did eight years naval reserve service, can we start calling for a full release of his reserve records, in order to see if he was ever AWOL?
Absolutely. How many drills did he skip while hanging out with his anti-war buddies? The first thing we need to look for is one old retired officer with Alzheimer's who says he "can't recall" Kerry showing up...

Kerry was transferred to "Ready Reserves" (inactive status) on 3 Jan 1970 and was obligated until 17 Feb 1972. "Inactive" status in the Ready Reserves back then meant just that: you were inactive. You were however required to be "ready", i.e. - keep uniforms handy, answer official correspondence and generally be ready in case your unit goes "active".

Kerry was then transferred to the "Stanby Reserves" in 1972 until 1978. This is almost being a civilian. You are more or less a registered war-fighter who can be called back up on in times of war.

In both instances, Kerry was not required to "pull duty" once a month like they do today.

Very good point, Eric- I'm used to the Aussie military reserve system, which is different entirely.

But... did he meet those easier service requirements fully? We really should have a full records release to satisfy everything.
