« Shoving Back | Main | Stick It To 'Em » August 5, 2004DevastatingDo you want to help prevent John Kerry from winning the election? Here are a few simple things you can do. 1. Buy, read and share this book. 2. Send the link to this political ad to every person on your email address list, and encourage them to do the same. 3. Donate some money to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth so the the ad can be broadcast many, many times. From Swift Boat Veterans for Truth: For more than thirty years, most Vietnam veterans kept silent as we were maligned as misfits, addicts, and baby killers. Now that a key creator of that poisonous image is seeking the Presidency we have resolved to end our silence.Their new television ad is the most effective political ad I have ever seen. John Kerry's whole rationale for his campaign is that he's a combat veteran (with three Purple Hearts!) and, therefore, he'll make a better wartime president than George W. Bush. Therefore, an examination of his real military record, through the eyes of soldiers and sailors who where there, is fair and - in a time of war - crucial. UPDATE: The Seattle Times' Collin Levey has an excellent commentary. Comments
It is a devastating ad. But the media and Kerry (with help from John McCain) are labelling this as dirty politics and accusing Bush of sinking into the gutter. I wouldn't be surprised if this actually hurts Bush even though there doesn't seem to be a direct connection between him and the swift boat men. Posted by: AWW at August 5, 2004 02:27 PMYou cant be foolish enough to believe that this ad which has already been denounced by John McCain, is going to have an effect on anyone not already hysterically anti-Kerry. I think the men who actually served with him, and the former Green Beret who says that Kerry saved his life, are going to drown this this ad out. There is a section from the chapter released in "Unfit to Command" that tells of Kerry speaking on the floor of the Senate in 1986, recalling how Nixon had ordered incursions into Cambodia, including his boat, on Christmas Eve and Christmas day 1968. He recalled be fired on by Khmer Rouge and even drunken S. Vietnam soldiers. Problem is, Nixon did not assume the presidency until Jan. 1969. And subsequant stories told by Kerry are said to tell of how his base camp was subject to mortar fire Xmas day, 55 miles from the Cambodian border. Which is ti? And if he was not in Cambodia, why make up the story? And if the story is false, what else has he said that is false? Posted by: Meatss99 at August 5, 2004 09:35 PMMr. Levey portrays Mr. Kerry as an opportunist. What puzzles me is that Kerry could have just as easily chosen to put Vietnam comfortably behind him and start building a political career on his presumed exploits. Why would a person interested only in getting ahead become involved with the Vietnam Veterans Against the War? As I mentioned to the Reverend, the best way to keep the spotlight on Bush's service is to keep hammering on Kerry's. You guys have got to learn to stop stepping on the garden rake! Posted by: SemiPundit at August 6, 2004 12:23 AMI posted this link on another of Bill's postings related to this ad, but wanted to put it here, too, to make sure people see it. Please see factcheck.org's critique of this ad: http://www.factcheck.org/article.aspx?docID=231 From what I can tell, factcheck.org is a nonpartisan group that seeks to determine whether claims made in both republicans' and democrats' ads have a factual basis or not. I'd be interested to hear people's responses. bruce Posted by: bruce at August 8, 2004 11:19 PMPost a comment
