Inside the War on Terror

The number one book on Amazon right now is one I look forward to reading with great anticipation. American Soldier, by General Tommy Franks, who retired in August 2003 after leading U.S. forces to victory in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The book draws on his own recollections and military records declassified for this book, offering a true insider’s account of the war on terrorism.

Franks is making the media rounds, and his interviews are hurting the anti-war Left big time, as he calmly and apolitically defends the war in Iraq and the pre-war belief that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. In a long interview with ABC's Ted Koppel, Franks makes the case for Iraq as the right second front in the war on terror - and makes it well:

We need to remember that to have left this regime alone to either own or to grow or produce weapons of mass destruction would, would have actually, in my view, would have been irresponsible by our government in a post-9/11 world.
Franks is right. In a pre-9/11 world, trying to "contain" Iraq through no-fly zones, embargos and a failing inspections process seemed an okay gamble. But continuing that approach in a post-9/11 world would have been insane.
