« Bush Announces Initiative to Help Minority Entrepreneurs; Media Ignores it | Main | Arghhh... » August 3, 2004Tennessee's Boss Hogg in Reelection Peril
In polls by both Dems and the GOP, TeamGOP has been told they revealed disturbing news for Naifeh. In Tipton County, Naifeh's home county, Naifeh is running in the low 40's percentile range, horrible results for supposedly the most powerful politico in West Tennessee. Among African-Americans Dr. Cannon is polling anywhere from a third to 40 percent, unbelievably good news for a Republican. While these numbers will likely tighten…is looks like Naifeh will be the one playing catch up with all of that out of town, out of state, special interest money. Naifeh's disclosure is interesting in that his financial support at home is almost nonexistent. If true, that's great news. Naifeh, a Democrat, is one of the worst legislators in Tennessee. He runs the Tennessee legislature the old-fashioned way - through backroom deals, closed meetings and cozying up to the special interests. He's married to one of the state's most powerful lobbyists, and he has worked tirelessly to defeat all sensible ethics legislation.
By contrast, the Republican alternative is Dr. Jesse Cannon, an African American doctor of impressive background and the right stand on such issues as taxes. Posted in Tennessee News

Tipton County is trending more and more Republican these days are more folks flee Memphis and Shelby County. But don't forget that Naifeh had his district -- 81 (http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/House/Map/Jpgs/HD81.jpg) -- gerrymandered to bring in Democrats from neighboring Haywood County. They were the edge that kept him in office this past election, definitely. How is Haywood trending? That will tell his tale. Posted by: mike hollihan at August 3, 2004 10:27 PMCannon is from Haywood County, and a big name there, so that should offset Naifeh somewhat there. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at August 4, 2004 07:52 AMBill, add another legislator to the 'list of worst' for possessing the same characteristics as Naifeh. That would be Senator Trail, a Republican. I was shocked to learn that he was a supposed conservative, but after Sundquist I shouldn't have been. Trail was the sponsor of the Super DMCA legislation that was finally passed this year. He, as much as Naifeh, deserves to lose and be cast out. Both are long term legislators, and both are in West Tennessee. Regrettably, they are like bookends, you can't get rid of one without the other. Democrats would never allow the hedge that Trail represents get a greater foothold in West Tennessee. Likewise, Republicans would be relunctant to get rid of Trail if it meant losing what little turf they still hold in West Tennessee. Posted by: jose at August 4, 2004 08:47 AMJose, You have DEMOCRAT Sen. Trail confused w/ someone. He's a freshman Dem (elected in 2000) from Murfreesboro, the geographic center of TN. His opponent is a great Republican and long-time NFIB member named Jim Tracy. Posted by: Lance at August 4, 2004 03:23 PM
