« Graceless Land | Main | Bush Announces Initiative to Help Minority Entrepreneurs; Media Ignores it »

August 2, 2004

Oh. Joy.

Is it just me or has the Left begun a concerted campaign to get links from and mentions on conservative blogs? I seem to have noticed a growing number of inbound emails from left-wing writers and bloggers in the last few weeks. Not hate-email, or letters debating me on some point, or rants opposing some blog item I've published, but emails urging me to link to this article or that post, always of the slam-Bush, slam-Republicans variety. Stuff like the following paranoid garbage, which I'll quote but never link to or even tell you where to find it:

The tremendous, appalling, unnecessary waste; the flagrant, obscene war profiteering and the rampant Capitol Hill corporate whoredom, if not reversed soon, will spell America's unravelling. The best we can hope for, if our present course is not averted, is totalitarian stabiliy; the WORST is a smoking, toxic wasteland overrun by ganglords. Or perhaps the annihilation of the human race - it's certainly within reach, and Bush's greatest power base, the Evangelicals, are quite publicly and unabashedly both praying for and trying to engineer it.
Apparently, the writer may not .. have read ... my blog. But, my, the Left's paranoia is amusing.

You noticed that, too?
I thought it was just me.
Of course, I keep my virus scanner running... it's happened before.

He certainly loves his adjectives. Must have a thumbworn Thesauras.

That's one busy head. Reminds me though -- I was thinking that someone should sponsor a Bad Chomsky contest to inject some humor into the culture war, with the winner getting to read a one or two minute excerpt from the podium at the Republican Convention.

just a thought...

Hang in there Bill. Yes the organized troll union is a busy bunch. One way to dispatch of the problem would be to eliminate links in comments; they are the cheapskates blog you know. By the way, have you checked in to the way TCP is now handling comments with a third party authorization service? I like the idea, especially if enough blogs make use of it.

I'm a big fan of psyops campaigns myself. If you're a big enough nut to put a Kerry '04 sticker on your car, then it would probably just send you off the rails if someone slapped a "We're Watching You" sticker underneath it. In traffic, someone would think that the Kerry endorser is saying that they're watching everybody but when the driver actually finds out that someone has desecrated the bumper of their Volvo S70 then we've got rock solid proof that the VWRC is everywhere. I used to do the same thing with The Federalist's "Annoy a Leftist" bumper stickers but the current paranoia strikes much deeper. Thus, much more entertaining!

The problem with psyops is that the ABB crowd will keep going the same direction even if off the rails. I would run a subtler sticker attack, with the alternate Kerry stickers, the ones with messages like "Because Teddy Kennedy isn't liberal enough".

apoplectic,

You must be a big hit at middle school.

I have a right to put my sticker on my car, but if you slap yours underneath it, I will assume that you are trespassing and defacing my property and I will whip your ass. I assume you are just kidding anyway, since God's Own Party insists on strict observance of the law.

As for me, paranoid? I only write what the voices in my head tell me to.

apoplectic,

p.s.--I'm sorry, I meant to say I would PREEMPTIVELY whip your ass, since I would probably have reason to believe you would go on to break into my car.

Or at least become involved in car-breaking-into-program-related-activities.
