« Ted Rall's Liberal Racism | Main | How John Edwards Manipulated Juries to Amass His Fortune »

Kerry/Edwards Just Like You. Only A Whole Lot Richer

millionair.jpgJohn Kerry and John Edwards, the wealthiest presidential/vice presidential ticket in American history (and the most liberal!) sets out on their first campaign swing to convince average Americans that they are just like them.

Except that they have million-dollar vacation homes and a whole lot more money. And better hair. And a plan to raise your taxes.

That's them in the first photo, waving, appropriately, to the people on your LEFT. And yes, it really does say Million Air on the steps. And no, it isn't accurate. Kerry and Edwards are both a lot richer than that. Kerry inherited some of his and married the rest, Edwards sued doctors and health insurance companies, driving up the cost of medical care for everyone else while funding the purchase of his very own mansion

Is it just me, or do you agree that John Edwards looks a lot like Richie Rich?

Bill

When did you turn into Tom Joad? Are you a follower of Noam Chomsky all of a sudden?

You sound like a Marxist. What's with all the class warfare?

Do you have a problem with capitalism?

If not - then you need to stop berating John Edwards for fulfilling the American Dream.

It's pretty funny to see Republicans attacking a candidate for being rich.

Can you see the irony?

I'm not berating Edwards for achieving the American dream (the, typically, the American Dream is thought to involve entrepreneurialism, not suing people).

I'm berating them for trying to pretend they have any clue what the average American's life is like.

John Edwards got rich by driving up the cost of healthcare. Kerry inherited and married his money. Neither contributed a positive thing to the economy in the getting of their wealth.

Can't you see the irony in a pair of the obscenely rich leading the charge against the "other America"?

I don't care much for Kerry or Edwards, but I must say I'm pretty disappointed in this post. I LIKE rich people, Bill. In fact, I aspire to BE one. I don't WANT rich people to be "just like me". I want to be just like them. And it's not as though the very rich GWB, whose millions also came from his family, is "just like me" either. So what???

And what's wrong with inheriting money all of a sudden? If you make millions, which I'm sure you hope to do, will you not leave it to your kids? Will that make them bad people?

typically, the American Dream is thought to involve entrepreneurialism, not suing people
That's only one way it's thought of, actually. Not everyone who fulfills the American dream is an entrepreneur. ("A person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture.") And, by the same definition, many lawyers ARE entrepreneurs. The practice of law is a legitimate profession, a perfectly good way to make money, and a great way to realize the American Dream. The fact that you don't approve of the kind of law someone practices doesn't diminish that in the least. Are you suggesting there are no cases where doctors and HMO's and big corporations are in the wrong and deserve to be sued? Maybe it's THEM and their negligence and malpractice that's driving up everyone's costs, not the lawyers that sue them.

Dave is correct

Bill (or have you changed your name to Che?) - your post sounds like the "politics of envy."

You act like becoming a successful lawyer is some sort of crime. What do you have against success and wealth?

Posted by: a at July 8, 2004 03:19 PM

It's not their wealth, it's their hippocracy. "We're rich guys, but we're on the side of the little guy and against rich guys so long as they're not as rich as us!"

Posted by: Another Dave at July 8, 2004 04:03 PM

Bush, Cheney, Kerry, Edwards. They're all rich. But two of them have consciences, and their first names are not George and Dick.

Posted by: Bill Kurth at July 8, 2004 07:18 PM

Yes Bill, they have consciences, and they still have their money. Maybe they can drawdown their fortunes before they come after my pittance.

You know, Bush does have a small vacation home in Crawford, TX and Cheney isn't doing too badly for himself either. One got most of his money through his daddy's connections and the other leveraged a career in public service into a lucrative gig as the CEO of a big government contractor which has been accused of swindling the government. I don't think you can really say that either Bush or Cheney "contributed a positive thing to the economy" in acquiring their wealth either.
