TdF: Lance Falls to Sixth. And That's Good

lance04.jpg

After driving the U.S. Postal "Blue Train" to the race lead yesterday (photo above), Lance Armstrong was happy to surrender the race lead and the yellow jersey today to Thomas Voeckler, one of a group of five riders who broke away from the main pack just seven miles into today's 125-mile fifth stage and finished 12:36 ahead of the main pack.

Armstrong is now in sixth place, 9:35 behind the race leader. But none of the top-five riders are considered contenders to win the overall race. The important stat: Armstrong maintains his 36-second lead over Tyler Hamilton, and longer leads over other main contenders Jan Ullrich (55 seconds behind), Levi Leipheimer (1:08 behind), Ivan Basso (1:17 behind), Roberto Heras (1:45 behind), Iban Mayo (5:27 behind).

Before today's stage, Armstrong indicated he would be happy to relinquish the race lead today - defending the yellow jersey in these early mostly-flat stages would exhaust his team before the crucial final week of mountain stages when the race will be won or lost.

Meanwhille, CNN/SI's Austin Murphy thinks Lance won the Tour yesterday. Two weeks ago, Murphy thought Lance had little chance.

Yep. Armstrong's method haven't varied from year to year.

1. In the flat stage, be near the front of the overall lead.
2. In the mountain stage, shake off the sprinter and flatland specialists.
3. Win.
