WMD Update: Iraq Nearly Became WMD Marketplace

Iraq was poised to become the "Grand Central Station" of a global illicit trade in weapons of mass destruction before the war, according to a forthcoming report from the Senate Intelligence Committee.

You dig irony?

The statement for Roberts, read as a whole, contradicts your headline.

What he said, translated for the irony deficient, was that western intelligence agencies had erroneous information from Iraqi official who thought other Iraqi officials controlled WMD that Iraq was poised to...yada, yada, yada.

Since when did Sarin not qualify as WMD?

I guess the military should stop training soldiers to put their masks on when a Sarin shell bursts overhead. After all, it's not like it's a WMD or anything.

Great non sequitur, Lance.

For Lance:

Fri Jul 2, 2:44 PM ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Multinational forces in Iraq (news - web sites) said that more than a dozen missile warheads said to contain mustard gas or sarin have tested negative for chemical agents.

Washington had announced the find by Polish troops on Thursday, which was later confirmed by Warsaw.

The head of Poland's military intelligence service also said on Friday that "terrorist" groups were seeking to acquire the weapons.

But the 122mm warheads, found in late June, have been found not to contain the deadly chemicals, a statement from multinational forces here said.

"Those 16 rounds were all empty and tested negative for any type of chemicals," it said.

Two other warheads found in mid-June were found to contain an insignificant amount of sarin gas. The armaments were left over from the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, the statement said.

"Due to the deteriorated state of the rounds and small quantity of remaining agent, these rounds were determined to have limited to no impact if used by insurgents against coalition forces."

Washington justified leading the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 by claiming the country was harbouring weapons of mass destruction. However, none has yet been found.

Well, adaplant, I'm heading over to Iraq in Nov/Dec as a member of the US military and I can tell you that there is plenty of WMD training being executed. B/c the stuff is there. However, I understand you take your walking orders from Michael Moore and other America-haters, so get ready for a big disappointment come November.

Come back alive, Lance. Good luck to you.

Unlike you, I don't accuse fellow Americans with a different political viewpoint of being "America-haters" which as slurs go is vile because (a) it is not true, (b) is a form of hate-speech whose sole intention is to increase animosity toward those so labeled and (c) is based on zero knowledge, in this case at least, of the person accused.

That said, your belief or faith that "the stuff is still there", all evidence to the contrary nothwithstanding, other than as ineffective relics of a past Iraq we lent aid and comfort to during the Iran-Iraq war, is understandable only as a last desperate clinging to the vanishing reasons Bush used to sell this Iraq war. As for your training, an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure and defensive training against CBN has been a part of every service-members' basic training since the memory of man runneth not to the contrary. True, it may have been stepped up, but again it is based on prudence, not a specific expectation WMDs will be found or used in Iraq.

With regard to November, unless you have a crystal ball, we'll both see what will happen in November in November.
