I've Got GMail

GMail logo.JPGI'm one of those lucky few who are beta-testing Gmail. Just got my account last night, courtesy of an invite from another blogger affiliated with Blogs For Bush. A blogger I've never met - ain't the blogosphere fun and beneficial! I'll let you know. For those of you concerned by the privacy implications of the Gmail offering - Google scans the emails and serves up text-related advertising in order to fund giving Gmail account holders free email and a gigabyte of storage space - I have a suggestion. Get a life. It's a freebie. If you don't like it, don't get a GMail account. Or, to quote Chris Alden, whose words I found via Steve Forrest:

If you don't like GMail, don't use it! Don't email to GMail addresses! But why should the CA legislature deprive us of the choice to use GMail, in the way Google built it, if we so decide? Let's be clear: this law deprives users of choice. It would prevent Google from producing a service that users could benefit from - if they choose!
Alden was criticizing a move afoot in the California legislature to regulate GMail, calling it "yet another case of big business using government to build barriers to innovative, new, and potentially commercially threatening business, aided and abbetted by paranoid radicals." No wonder, Alden says, that businesses are fleeing California at a rapid rate.

Bill, I beat you. I got my invite last week. I'm still thinking about how to use it. Even with one gig of space I fear a misstep in publicizing the new address will just result in that much more spam.

As a blogspot user, I was one of the first to get the gmail accounts. I've had mine over a month now. As a 'seasoned' user (g), I've been given the opportunity to invite others 3 times now. The first time I was allowed 2 invites, and the last two times I have been allowed to invite 3 each.

For a free email addy, you get what you pay for. It's not the best interface as I prefer POP - but you can't beat the storage capacity. At a 10MB per email limit, I can easily send larger files I couldn't send before (and then came dropload.com).

I'm jealous. I signed up but haven't received diddly. I run my own email server at home and would just as soon use someone else's servers for storage.

I couldn't care less if Gmail read my email. Heck, maybe I could get it to read my blog and drive up my hit counts!
